The bigger problem Democrats face is not really political -- at least, as far as I can tell, having interviewed many Democratic office-holders, office-seekers, donors, influencers, and rank and file voters across the country.
The Democrats' fundamental challenge is psychological, or philosophical. They do not believe that, to the extent that one calls oneself progressive, one can be a bad person. They believe that their progressivism inoculates them against hatred, backwardness and so forth. They imagine that, to the extent that one is in possession of unfortunate opinions, one has simply strayed from one's progressive bearings -- forgotten oneself.
They are wrong. They forget that antisemitism is not inherently political but psychological, and they forget that our contemporary political compartments are functions of the French Revolution, and they further forget that the storming of the Bastille comes long after the first dismal flickerings of the antisemitic impulse. In other words, they do not grasp that that impulse has nothing to do with one's political leanings, that it is much older, deeper, harder to extricate than that.
Once Democrats come to terms with this -- once they recognize that they may have better ideas than Republicans but are not at all morally superior to them -- they will be in a position to do something about the cancer consuming their party.

A little late, but I dive into the wrong numbers here. Women's employment rates haven't increased since the 1990s, and even among young-college they still trail men. Industries have actually became more male within themselves; however female-dominated fields grew much faster. /1

What percentage of electoral college opponents do you think would actually just prefer a single world government in which there were no borders and all the people on the planet got an equal say in every decision?
In a lot of these debates, there’s the narrow, immediate concern, but then there’s an underlying worldview that’s operative and controlling (and ultimately more interesting).

there are in fact good civic arguments for the electoral college but they hinge on the fact that the united states is a union of states so things like the president (and in its original conception the senate) should be decided by state which, yes, may have different populations.
but today no one understands anything so everyone thinks it should just be popular national vote for everything.

This is an argument for the Senate, not the Electoral College.
The EC functionally makes the wishes of everyone but the swing states totally irrelevant. Are there rural voters in the *current* swing states? Sure. But theres also Atlanta, Philly, Vegas, Milwaukee, Detroit.

There is a good civic argument for the "electoral college". Almost all western democracies give more weight to rural voters, for the same reason as the original compromise when ratifying the Constitution. Without some counterbalance, rural areas simply become "colonies" of urban areas, with government serving the interests of urban areas over the wishes of rural areas. In almost all western democracies, the person leading the country is not chosen by a popular vote, but by representatives. Those representatives are in turn chosen primarily as local representatives for individual communities. The electoral college giving more voting power to some is not a violation of democratic principles, but the norm in western liberal democracies.
