@notJohnDenver Guy running for governor of Iowa saying it lowers his IQ to run a chainsaw. I think there is an insult hidden in there somewhere. But not sure, I have been cutting trees off of fences with my chainsaw all morning.

The boys got turned in this morning. Rain held off for the first 2 stops, then we got soaked. We never got stuck, so not a bad morning. This is a new yearling, can’t wait to see the calves from him. Probably the best genetics we have ever bought.

I survived another planting season. My row crop farming is done until harvest. I really don’t like it, but it gives me beer money for the year. Time to think about baling some hay.

Gus is ready to go feed cows. So far this is one of the easiest calving springs we have had. Things are really greening up this week. About time to start taking pairs to grass.

We have a new babysitter. For some reason this gelding and this bottle calf have bonded, they will stand there side by side all day. My wife caught the little heifer giving him a kiss last night.

@rhofford That’s why I avoid them. Big, dumb and lethargic. I don’t need that stress at calving. My calves are just as big and sell for the same money as all those Simmy cross calves at the barn.

@flintlockactual They have been better than any help I could ever hire. Gus can work his ass off all day on cows and still has to chase his ball when we come in at night. Ty struggles to keep up, but he never gives up.

My blue heeler appreciation post has blown up and it has come to my attention that rural farm culture may not translate properly to our new Japanese friends so let me lay out a couple things in clear terms. 1. Heelers are a mix of working dogs and wild dog (although the wild dog is quite a ways back in their bloodline at this point). They are prone to nipping and being destructive for attention. Unless you find yourself a calm breed, are a very strict owner, or have the ability to run them more often then you could believe was necessary I do not recommend them as family house pets. 2. A heeler is THE working dog. If they do not have a job to do they will get destructive and mean. 3. If you happen to come upon a heeler that you do not know, make sure you talk to the owner first before petting them. they can be very territorial of their perceived space. 4. Heelers may be one of the toughest breeds of dog out there and we as owners are VERY proud of that fact. When we say things like "I have seen this dog get absolutely stomped by a mean old cow" or "she got run over buy the tractor and kept on working" we're not taking sadistic pride in the harm of our dogs, these dogs put themselves in harms way in the course of their job (or in the case of getting hit by vehicles, perceived job protecting or herding something) and we are always amazed by their ability to get up, shake it off, and get right back to work. This is Bluey, she's a grade A good girl.

These cows are rockstars and them babies are tougher than me. This makes 7 calves since the temp started dropping last night. All outside, all happy. I’m about froze. Due dates not until next week, amazing what a pressure change will do.

@schrieferranch Rebuilding my old baler for that reason. Makes just as good of bale as a new one for way less. I could never bale enough hay to justify the price of a new one.

One down. Started with a black one. But it’s a heifer, out of the 2 bulls I bought last winter. Can’t wait to see her as a cow.

@JerodMcDaniel Our cows, heifers included, job is to have a calf every 365 days, unassisted, and wean that calf in the fall. Our job is nutrition, health and management. We research genetics and keep heifers every year. If they can’t do it on their own we have no use for them.

Probably doing it wrong, but we let the cows and bred heifers calve on their own out in pastures or cornstalk fields, wherever they may roam. If they have problems, we drive them a ways into corrals and take care of it. But they tend to do just fine on their own.

Work load got cut in half today. Shipped our steers this morning. Keeping the heifers for now, will decide on them closer to green grass. Have to admit, we’re kind of excited this year.

Bessent says Treasury will now require anyone that is sending money out of USA to check a box — if you’re on PUBLIC ASSISTANCE wiring money OUT?! YOU ARE FLAGGED as either not needing the $ — or as a potential CRIMINAL. 💥
