The real tax on the american people is government spending. When government spends more than it takes in, deficits are paid indirectly through hidden taxation on the people via inflation and currency devaluation. And historically, few things have been more destructive to civilizations than inflation. Milton Friedman explained that inflation occurs because people ask government to do something impossible. They want government to spend other people’s money on them, while protecting their own money from being spent on others. They want the prices of what they sell to rise, but the prices of what they buy to fall. This inevitably creates a vicious cycle where politicians promise benefits today and pass the hidden costs into the future and onto future generations through a steadily weakening dollar.
