The reaction proceeds with complete diastereoselectivity. DFT studies not only provided insight in the origin of stereoselectivity, but also showed that the reaction proceeds through a hydrogen bonding mechanism, resembling the accepted mechanism of the Passerini reaction.

We use an intermediate from our recent total synthesis of monoterpene indole alkaloids as the imine input in a three-component Ugi reaction to gain rapid access to diverse, highly functionalized 'synthetic alkaloids'. @brendan_horst @THansenChem

Petasis three-component reaction without the classic restriction on the aldehyde input: great work! The scope of accessible branched tertiary amines is amazing!

Very proud of this work! 🔥 In 2021, our work on understanding H2 activation by metallylenes appeared in @ChemicalScience (doi.org/10.1039/D0SC05…). Now we close the cycle and report how these metallylenes can potentially catalyze hydrogenation reactions in @EurJOC!⬇️
