Air Florida Flight 90 waiting for clearance for taxi at Gate 12 in Washington's National Airport on 1/13/82.

On Jan 13, 1982, Air Florida Flight 90, a Boeing 737-200 (N62AF), crashed into Washington D.C.’s 14th Street Bridge moments after takeoff from National Airport. The jet struck 7 vehicles and plunged into the icy Potomac River — killing 78 people, including 4 motorists. The NTSB found pilot error as the cause: the crew failed to properly deice, left engine anti-ice systems off, used reverse thrust in a snowstorm, and tried to melt ice using the jet exhaust of another aircraft. Only 5 people survived — including flight attendant Kelly Duncan. Passenger Arland D. Williams Jr. heroically helped others escape before drowning. President Reagan later honored the rescuers’ bravery in his State of the Union address. A reminder of why deicing is crucial.
