I'm interested in quantitative behaviour and neuroscience, and lately have been looking at cuttlefish.

Happy to announce two new papers out in Nature today! One is on octopus sleep, where Neuropixels recordings shows a wake-like stage of 'active sleep' accompanied by rapidly changing skin patterns that match those of waking behavior rdcu.be/dfAQt

@SamAlbertReiter @Nature @MpiBrain The second @Nature paper highlights the REM-like sleep phase in octopuses, which may suggest they can dream. Congratulations Prof. Reiter @SamAlbertReiter! (2/3🧵) ow.ly/a21G50P13Rl

@aguilarr_m @EricLeonardis Good question! Turns out it is possible to head fix octopuses, and they will readily fall asleep under head fixation.

@UW @OIST_TSVP @MpiBrain Nature did a nice summary video on the octopus work, where you can see first authors Aditi Pophale and Tomo Mano at work, and a rare citing of @CephWarden when he isn't diving. Octopus brain recordings were worked out by the inimitable Kazumichi Shimizu. youtube.com/watch?v=006DjA…

Both studies were wonderful collaborations, the octopus work with Leenoy Meshulam @UW and who visited Okinawa as part of @OIST_TSVP, and the cuttlefish work with the lab of Gilles Laurent @MpiBrain

@_fernando_rosas Small nocturnal mammals in the age of reptiles becoming diurnal more recently where vision is more advantageous? Not sure if mammals got better at audition.

Is it true that through evolution mammalian brains have moved away from olfaction as dominant, giving more predominance to vision and audition? If so, why? Are the latter somehow more powerful — but perhaps also more expensive — channels from which to learn about the world?
