I know this bit of pop history is nice and heartwarming and all, and I myself have parroted it in the past because it's a nice story, the truth is that there's no reputable source to this claim and a simpler explanation for the adoption of LGBT over GLBT (it sounds better)

Queer History Fact: during the AIDS crisis, many lesbians became frontline caregivers and activists for gay and bi men when society and institutions abandoned them. Their leadership and solidarity are part of why the ‘L’ now comes first in LGBTQIA+.
