Hi. It’s been a minute. The Omaha Public Library Board of Trustees is prepared to vote on a resolution this Thursday to create an advisory committee that will determine the future of Omaha’s libraries.

Y’all were *very vocal* that you did not want this. And they’re doing it anyway. Philanthropy does not require a rewrite of a public institution’s mission and values. Show up and speak out at this week’s Library Board Meeting, Thursday, 5pm at South Omaha Library.

This committee would be tasked with defining priorities for Omaha’s public library system, including creating new staffing models, and creating a new mission, vision and values for Omaha Public Libraries. They will be responsible for the future of Omaha Public Libraries.

Last call to submit public comment in support of a publicly elected library board before the General Affairs Committee Hearing. Don't forget you also have to verify your comment via email before noon tomorrow, Friday, February 11.

Action for library supporters: On 1/20, @SenMcKinneyLD11 introduced LB1256. This bill requires cities of the Metropolitan Class (i.e. Omaha) to have elected library boards instead of appointed boards. LB1256 has a hearing in the General Affairs Committee on Feb. 14 at 1:30 pm.

We know you’re tired because we are. We continue to seek information via tips and public records requests, and we’ll be here to remind the City of its promises they’ve made to you. Stay tuned for future calls to action. If you’re with us, there is still work to be done.

Through all of this, you have been ignored. With Tuesday’s vote from City Council to approve the leases at 1401 Jones and 3020 S. 84th Street, the city has begun the process of shuttering the Main Library and bringing uncertainty to the future of library services in Omaha.

We agree, prime for a library. If they're getting a skyscraper how about a library right next door? Agree? Contact your councilmember and tell them you want a library at 13th & Douglas.
