I noticed my dad watching Youtube on the TV. Nothing unusual, he does that all the time. I glanced over and saw it was one of those right-wing political commentators he always watches. Out of curiosity I started watching along. The person on the video was ranting about how the Imperial Family supposedly wants more budget for personal expenses, going on about how ordinary people are struggling just to live in these tough economic times, and how it’s “outrageous” for them to be asking for more taxpayer money right now. What threw me off was that this same guy is usually a hardcore supporter of the Imperial Family. I kept watching more closely. There were facial expressions but there was barely any body movement so it felt off. Still the voice sounded completely real so I didn’t question it at first. I looked up the channel on my phone just to make sure… turns out it was AI-generated. I told my dad right away. He was surprised, but at the same time he had the same suspicions as me, he just couldn’t confirm it. We did more research and it turns out the entire “news” about the Imperial Family asking for a budget increase for personal expenses was completely made up. Whoever made that video was just fabricating things and ended up deceiving hundreds of thousands of people (it had over 100k views in less than a day with tons of comments from people thinking it was real). Also, take this with a grain of salt, but I’ve seen people online saying that channels like this might be run by foreign actors (🇨🇳❓) trying to stir things up and destabilize Japanese politics. It’s honestly scary how convincing AI has become. We really need to start regulating, especially when it comes to politics.
