The popular legend of the liver birds atop the building, is that the female bird, Bella, looks out to sea, watching for the seamen to return home safe, while the male, Bertie, looks over the city, watching over the families of those at sea.

A brief history of...The Liver Birds! A staple symbol of the city of Liverpool. The Liver bird is a mythical creature that is represented in the city, most notably atop of the Liver Buildings.
