@NotWoofers This time around 🇫🇷 has suffered casualties in 🇮🇶 and damages to its bases in 🇦🇪. Last time round 🇫🇷 has helped out in the past with interceptions in the Red Sea and over 🇯🇴 against 🇮🇷 proper and its proxies. Doesn’t mean we have to endorse or support further escalation.

@NotWoofers What about providing air-coverage over 🇦🇪, 🇯🇴 (and 🇨🇾) with a 100+ of Shaheeds downed? • The backlash is about masking and scapegoating the epic failure of this operation • Never had any viable plan been made to improve 🇺🇸 standing by the administration • +sudden magic deal.

Realistically, is there anything NATO could have done to satisfy Trump here with regards to Iran which would not have resulted in a European capital eating a ballistic missile?

On COMET very long range air-to-air missile. While there are still many unknown regarding future French very long range air-to-air missile named COMET, it should not be seen as a remplacement or a competitor to METEOR long range missile. Both will most probably complement each others, just like METEOR works alongside MICA-NG and IRIS-T. COMET is needed by French air force, and most importantly by its strategic air forces (FAS) in order to push back the adversary's fighters deep inside its territory. It could probably be regarded as the equivalent of the machine gun for the infantry, that gives the soldiers on foot time to rush toward their firing position. As the chief of French procurment agency said, the requirements are that "the missile works and goes far" and should be operational in 2030. So we probably won't have a very sophisticated missile like the METEOR with its statoreactor, but more probably a "low-cost" missile with a dual-pulse solid rocket booster. The main question is for fire conduct. Rafale's radar is quite small and probably cannot detect targets with small RCS very far away, so it will most probably need designation by others means, like through the future Global Eye AEW&C aircraft. PS: Bear in mind that I have no specific insights on that project, so those are all asumptions, though based on the different statments and needs expressed recently, especially following Russia/Ukraine and India/Pakistan engagements.
Amaël Kotlarski@JakOSpades

In yesterday's parliamentary hearing the 🇫🇷 DGA stated that they hoped to get the COMET in 2030 'before the future Meteor missile'. So from the sounds of it, its a interim sidegrade before the METEOR MLU come online, rather than a full-fat replacement. youtu.be/sVT0PUBUtMc

@Etienne_Marcuz An AIM-173B equivalent « air-launched Aster 15/30 » would also likely not be « cost-effective » as it contains the ABM-capable PIF-PAF guidance correction which is overkill for targets flying at Ma 0.8 to Ma 2.5 (MiG-31). Although still be cool and widen Aster’s appeal.

@Etienne_Marcuz With all due respect I’m not convinced by this interpretation. In my opinion this «Comet» refers Meteor MLU. I don’t see how a «simpler» very-long-range missile can be conceived cost-efficiently. It could also refer to a «STRATUS RS» derivative (also ramjet and expensive).

@JakOSpades @Mr_Mat_fr @epelgrino @ATE_CHT A single-engine aircraft like F-35 with larger inertia ingesting explosion gases or debris at low-altitude after a gun kill of a Shaheed is not advisable I’d argue. Better integrate F-35 with external APKWS rocket pods using on-board EOTS to provide sufficient separation. (3/3)

@JakOSpades @Mr_Mat_fr @epelgrino @ATE_CHT Now I wouldn’t read too much into that because it’s still going to be a « last resort » effort due to derby, blast gas injection and reduced control authority at low-speeds and high-AoA. So this is likely not advised as long as better options are available. (2/n)

Aside from the fact the 🇬🇧 has not procured any GPU-9/A 25 mm gun pods for the F-35B, what are the chances that the Typhoons have similar FC limitations than the Rafales when it comes to close-range gun engagements on low-and-slow targets like Shaheds ? x.com/DefenceHQ/stat…
Amaël Kotlarski@JakOSpades

The Rafale's FCU has also be modified rapidly by Dassault to allow for close-range gun kills on Shahed type targets. Perhaps explains why have seen so many MICA engagements so far. x.com/Harry_Boone/st…

@JakOSpades @Mr_Mat_fr Agreed fuselage, electronics and (off-the shelf) diesel combustion engine can be handled well by automotive manufacturer on adapted assembly lines. The ofc need sufficient (state) orders to justify assigned human and capital ressources and realise the unit price advantage.

@StephanVelines @Mr_Mat_fr Absolutely, that is going to be the biggest bottleneck / challenge. But my point is that by designing the weapon to fit existing production lines and workforce expertise, rather than the other way round, you are going to reduce some friction and cost.

I agree, getting GM or Ford to produced complex munitions is going to be tricky, and that's before you get into the challenges of warhead production and installation. I think 🇫🇷's approach is more pragmatic: design a low-tech munition to plug into existing auto-production lines.

I am not really sure what Ford or other automakers could realistically bring to the table tbh The manufacturing model for most modern munitions is the antithesis of the manufacturing model for automobiles.

@AirPowerNEW1 @VLS_Appreciator Soon enough, aim is to have an APKWS-equivalent in operational use in summer: • 2x 12 ACUELUS 68 LG (Laser guided 68mm rockets) • target detection & tracking via Talios targeting pod (most likely)
bruno aviation@Bruno_Aviation

@StephanVelines @VLS_Appreciator Well excellent then. Because this is what I tweeted about - actual combat capability used in real world tactical operations vs..well..things on the table for potential action in the future.

APKWS demonstrated cruise missile defense capability more than five years ago, long before it demonstrated its now enhanced sUAS defeat capability thanks to upgrades and the new proximity fuze. A ground based capability is neat but will have extremely limited envelope.

Huge competitive advantage of 🇫🇷 to manage the entire supply-chain, integration and certification « in house ». If there really is a necessity to move fast (pressure on ammunition stocks), fast is how 🇫🇷 moves.

We’re so back (to hunting Shaheeds with Rafale)! Looks very much like LASER guidance via Talios-pod and ACUELUS 68 LG guided rockets indeed. Great news though and swift integration.

🇫🇷 DGA will evaluate a low-cost, long-range drone by Turgis et Gaillard and car manufacturer Renault. To facilitate mass production, the drone uses a automotive-derived diesel combustion engine.

@stromgade @cameron19460429 I’m hoping the architecture is modular enough to enable: • rapid evolution (e.g. guidance in jamming prone environments, final-stage targeting) • hardware variations (trading fuel and warhead size depending on targets, sub-/cluster munitions) • decoy/jamming variants.

I think this is actually a much-needed step in the right direction. American automakers are great at scaling production and some of the core competencies overlap especially with basic UAV's and lightly armored vehicles but even with more advanced systems and wiring/ integration
The Spectator Index@spectatorindex

The Pentagon has approached automakers General Motors and Ford about shifting some capacity to 'make arms and military supplies', according to Wall Street Journal.
