I’ve been hearing this line quite frequently these days: “India is the hottest country in the world.” While this may sometimes be true in summer, it is misleading and provide incomplete picture without understanding climate and natural weather patterns. During mid-April to June, India—and other regions around the ~23°N latitude belt—naturally receive high solar radiation due to the Earth’s tilt. As a result, high temperatures are normal and occur every year across many parts of the globe. Afternoon temperatures over India are often among the highest because it is daytime with intense sun there, while large parts of the Earth are experiencing evening or night. In addition, the geography of the Indian subcontinent plays an important role: the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayas act as barriers that limit the intrusion of cold polar air, allowing heat to build up over the region. These high temperatures are not new—they have been a regular seasonal feature for a very very long time. While global warming and other factors are raising average temperatures worldwide, India being very hot in summer is largely a natural seasonal pattern, similar to how naturally the North Pole is the coldest region during winter.

Why only India?

No trees, more heat urban roads trap extreme temperatures. Green cover cools naturally; the difference is not small, it’s survival.
