Yesterday, the First Minister's official spokesman asserted as fact that energy bills would come down in the event of independence He also insisted the Scot Gov couldn't set out its energy strategy in a devolved context due to ongoing global events (Iran war) Utterly unserious.
Sam Taylor@staylorish

Kate Forbes was on a panel yesterday at @HolyroodDaily spring event. I asked her: Q: Have you seen the calculations behind the “third off energy bills with independence” claim? Will voters get to see them before the election? A: “I’m not going to commit to anything just now.”

Pro-independence podcaster submits thorny FOI to Scottish gov and ... is offered a sit down with civil servants to help work it out Pro-union think tank asks for civil servant meeting to assist its FOI. Hard no. Bespoke service for some but not others? scotsman.com/news/politics/…

Warren Mosler (who was in Edinburgh to talk MMT) says that Liz Truss could have got away with the mini-budget if only she had monetised the national debt.

Anton Muscatelli is doubly correct. The situation is grave. And none of the parties will be straight with voters about what this means.

1/ Pro-independence organisation submits an FOI request to Scot Gov about bonds plan. Civil servants offer to meet with them because the cost limit exemption is likely to apply. So… I asked for a meeting about the same subject, with the same civil servants… and was rebuffed. 🤔

Alyn Smith in @ScotNational. This kind of facile thinking is absolutely endemic in Scotland. For about the millionth time: renewables are not a jackpot. Norwegian hydro, where nature did much of the capex, is an exception. But Scottish wind definitely isn’t.

Yesterday, John Swinney urged the UK Gov to remove the energy profits levy to “enable developments that can be compatible with our climate action”. But last year, Swinney was clear that he believes new developments in the North Sea can *never* be compatible with climate action.
Sam Taylor@staylorish

1/ This is significant. After his speech today in Glasgow, John Swinney gave the clearest statement yet of Scot Gov’s position on the Rosebank and Jackdaw oilfields. He couldn’t have been any clearer that he agrees with the recent court judgment which overturned the consents.

Oddly, if you submit an FOI request asking the Scottish Government for evidence that Scotland’s renewables are low-cost, or even just to identify a single low-cost generation asset, they have absolutely nothing. Because Swinney’s rhetoric is simply not true.
John Swinney@JohnSwinney

Scotland produces huge amounts of renewable energy, but the UK's broken energy system means people's bills are through the roof. Scotland's energy should work for the benefit of people, not Westminster. On May 7th, vote SNP for the fresh start of independence, with lower bills.

Immensely frustrating that Swinney is allowed to get away with the fabrications at the beginning of this clip. Those claims are not “fine”. They are complete horseshit.
John Swinney@JohnSwinney

It’s unacceptable that in energy-rich Scotland, people’s energy bills are going through the roof. The best solution to that comes with independence. Right now, the energy market is reserved to the UK government. It’s time they get a move on and protect households.

One day the SNP might choose a leader prepared to tell fantasists within the party some hard truths. John Swinney is plainly not that leader.

An SNP delegate rails against the “extreme fiscal negligence” of the UK Government’s failure to prepare for the loss of subsidies from Scotland. A tremendous deadpan performance.
