If two parties want to become one then that should be done *before* the election. By all means cooperate but this would be wrong in principle whether rules could be manipulated.
Hannah Graham@DrHannahGraham

@Scott_Wortley Indeed, the political dynamics of it could be messy and risky. Rule 5.2 in the standing orders isn't clear to me whether it would necessarily be allowed, but if it is, it means it could feel like a pretty fragile arrangement if it does proceed...

The PO must be beyond reproach as truly independent defender of Parliament. There are a number of effective respected MSPs who fit the bill. Holyrood would be damaged if a party loyalist were chosen. 2/2

Scottish Parliament must have an independent authoritative Presiding Officer. I suggested Alison Johnstone 5 years ago as likely choice only to be told privately that Green group decided to forego POship. At least to her credit, AJ showed independence... 1/2

The process for electing the new Presiding Officer must be more engaging & transparent. For such an important role, there must be a public debate in the chamber, with candidates laying out their ideas & vision.
@GinaDavidson@ginadavidsonlbc

PSA: New MSPs are being inducted over the next two days in Holyrood, the official swearing in will happen on Thursday, overseen by outgoing PO Alison Johnstone. The MSPs will then elect a new PO and DPOs. Election of First Minister is next week.

Suspect my previous critical comments about SPADs lies behind this daft response. Apparently this one thinks only selected people are allowed to criticise senior politicians - note no defence of Cab Secy's evident confidence in her ignorance.

@ProfJMitchell Not sure it's a good look for an old, middle class man to disparage a young, talented woman in such a public, nasty way. But that's what entitlement does for you.

It's fair to discuss what constitutes a mandate for independence as we are hearing so much of on BBC Scotland's coverage but there are other pressing issues...

It's the confident assertion when patently so ill informed that is so damaging to our politics. The days when SNP really was really on top of EC/EU affairs is long gone. Recall many conversations with Jim Sillars and others back in 1980s. Different world.
James Mitchell@ProfJMitchell

Classic case of a loyalist over-promoted far too quickly. Guess her prospects of replacing John Swinney in next Parliament are reduced. Perhaps had SNP leadership given thought to developing potential future leaders rather than awarding loyalty then might have been different.

“I’m sorry, there are absolutely no fiscal requirements for joining the EU. What you are talking about is the Exchange Rate Mechanism.” Jaw-dropping ignorance from Màiri McAllan.

There have been ideas and policies aplenty but mostly not credible. It is not lack of 'fresh' policies as lack of 'fresh' and credible policies. It is easy to dream up fresh populist gimmicks to impress electors. Much more difficult to address serious challenges ahead.
The Reid Foundation@ReidFoundation

“By common consent the 2026 Holyrood campaign has been uninspiring, short of fresh policy and ideas and failing to make an impression on voters”. But it still matters and the voting system plays a part in the outcome. Good analysis by Mark Diffley. diffleypartnership.co.uk/election-run-i…

- Two-thirds of Reform's money is wired from Thailand - Ben Delo, pardoned by Trump for breaking money-laundering rules, has given £4m. - Farage's secret £5m bung A new model of politics is meeting an old model of transparency. With dangerous results: times-comment.com/farage123

A wall of crypto money is waiting to flood UK politics, as it did America's in 2024. It now has a vehicle: Reform UK. And Nigel Farage, who took a £5m "personal donation" from a crypto king. This isn't an insurgency: it’s a counter-elite. My column:- times-comment.com/farage123

Respond with abuse when no reasoned response available. Sad state of affairs. Whatever happened to positive campaigning @StephenNoon

@gordymeister @ProfJMitchell You want it to fail so you can gloat. It would require cross party support and cross government too. But capitalist cunts are running the show. Shame on you for supporting them.

Difficult to see how anyone could miss that this issue wasn't already a major concern. False promises in response to public concerns should be condemned. This response at least dilutes original claim that policy will be implemented.
Matthew Ball@MattyBall93

@ProfJMitchell A voluntary system would still deliver a public good. We finally have food cost inflation on the agenda and we are looking for solution - this was completely absent before SNP manifesto.

Building false hope with promises of this kind has to be exposed and challenged. Parties need to explain how they will deliver a policy. Too easy to make false promises.
Ewan Gibbs@ewangibbs

@ProfJMitchell From another cynical perspective, this policy did the job of communicating that the SNP wanted to address the cost of living crisis during an election campaign. The problems and details are for afterwards

Classic case of blundering into a populist ill thought out policy that took no account of implementation. John Swinney's version of Theresa May's social care U-turn during 2017 election. John Swinney signals U-turn on plans to cap food prices thetimes.com/article/d0bac8…
