Social rejection hurts, but it also offers information we can learn from. Our latest work links the brain’s ‘social rejection’ network to learning, giving a computational account of neural responses to social rejection. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

Happy to have presented our work from @USC_SLAC_lab at #SNE2024 which investigated learning computations guiding who people choose to connect with after rejection or acceptance

Looking forward to our symposium tomorrow at #APS24SF on "How Semantic Meaning Shapes and Is Shaped By Social Learning"! We'll explore how language facilitates social learning and develops through interaction, across self-concept, reinforcement learning, and emotion labels.

Our latest work out in @TrendsCognSci: Simplifying Social Learning — we consider how social expertise simplifies complex reinforcement learning.
Leor Hackel@leorhackel

Excited to share new work in @TrendsCognSci on Simplifying Social Learning: authors.elsevier.com/a/1iZ4S4sIRvTA… We highlight how social expertise lets us simplify complex reinforcement learning, offering a prototype for how people can turn hard learning problems into easier ones.

Implications of our latest work: 1) Social concepts make complex choices easier 2) The balance of model-based vs model-free learning may reflect conceptual ease of a model, rather than confusion re: instructions 3) RL looks different in familiar (vs novel) environments
Leor Hackel@leorhackel

Some implications: 1) A key source of our social success may lie in the social concepts we develop early in life. These give us pre-compiled abstractions that simplify later complex choices.

We naturally size each other up, trying to figure out who we like, who's honest, who's competent. This week on the podcast, @leorhackel shares his work on how we learn about other people and the different impressions we end up forming of them.
Opinion Science (a podcast)@OpinionSciPod

Ep 78! @leorhackel studies how we learn about other people. Through economic games and neuroimaging, he finds that we build all kinds of ideas about others that shape our own choices. Apple: buff.ly/3fTwmZr Spotify: buff.ly/2zK5vyT Web: buff.ly/429YTll

Our new work bridges Fuzzy Trace Theory and social impressions: people form two kinds of impressions (relative or categorical), which can lead to very different patterns of social choice.
Leor Hackel@leorhackel

New in JEP:G with @pmendesiedlecki: We often forget details of others' behavior but remember the gist. Drawing on Fuzzy Trace Theory, we find that people form social impressions in two modes that lead to very different choices about who to help or hire. hackellab.org/_files/ugd/c5d…

In work now in press, we find that people generalize reward associations from individuals to groups--and this influences their interaction choices even when past rewards no longer predict future outcomes. w/ Drew Kogon, @david_m_amodio, & @ProfWendyWood: hackellab.org/groups-jesp
