Marie-Antoinette was the victim of one of history's greatest identity thefts. A con artist named Jeanne de Valois-Saint-Rémy convinced a Cardinal that the Queen wanted a 2,800-carat diamond necklace but couldn't buy it openly.
The Ruse: The con artist hired a Marie Antoinette lookalike to meet Cardinal de Rohan in a dark grove at night.
The Result: Even though the Queen was completely innocent and hadn't even met the Cardinal, the public believed she had tried to defraud the crown. This scandal effectively destroyed her remaining reputation.
