Pakistan Defense Minister’s Tweet & Israel’s Role in Islamabad Talks Prime Minister @CMShehbaz, at a moment of diplomacy, it would have been far more constructive for your Defense Minister to be inviting Israel to the table in Islamabad, not posting inflammatory and antisemitic remarks that risk undermining your peace-building diplomacy. I say this as someone who has visited Islamabad and worked on Pakistan-Israel relations. This was disappointing, and it matters. Smearing an entire nation and invoking antisemitic tropes on the eve of US-Iran talks sends the wrong signal and risks eroding trust in Pakistan’s role as a serious peace broker. Remarks like these also raise questions about related claims, including Pakistan’s position that a Hezbollah ceasefire was part of the broader understanding. Credibility in diplomacy depends on consistency. At a moment like this, there was an opportunity to do something bold: include Israel in the conversation shaping the region’s future and addressing Iran’s behavior, which has impacted Pakistan, Israel, and Arab partners alike. It would have made strategic sense. Israel is central to the security equation. Including it would have strengthened the talks, reinforced Pakistan’s role as a bridge-builder, and signaled a broader commitment to regional stability. Twenty years ago, Pakistan showed leadership in engaging Israel. A Pakistani leader addressed American Jewish leaders and opened the door to dialogue. That legacy still matters [see it here: ajcongress.org/uncategorized/…] American Jewish Congress President @DanielRosenNYC and I briefly met you at #UNGA. Moments like this define leadership. This is an opportunity to reinforce trust, and shape the region’s future with it.
