गद्दाफी को क्यों मारा गया ? लीबिया में बिजली का बिल नहीं था, सभी नागरिकों को बिजली मुफ्त मिलती थी ! कर्ज़ (लोन) पर ब्याज नहीं था, क्योंकि बैंक सरकार के थे और कानून के अनुसार नागरिकों को 0% ब्याज पर लोन मिलता था ! गद्दाफी ने कहा था कि जब तक लीबिया के हर व्यक्ति के पास घर नहीं होगा, तब तक वह अपने माता-पिता के लिए भी घर नहीं खरीदेगा ! हर नई शादी करने वाले जोड़े को सरकार की तरफ से 60,000 दीनार मिलते थे, जिससे वे अपना घर लेकर परिवार शुरू करते थे ! तालीम (शिक्षा) और इलाज मुफ्त था ! गद्दाफी से पहले लीबिया में सिर्फ 25% लोग पढ़े-लिखे थे, जबकि उनके दौर में यह 83% हो गया ! अगर कोई खेती करना चाहता, तो सरकार उसे मुफ्त घरेलू सामान, बीज और पशु देती थी ! अगर लीबिया में इलाज संभव न हो, तो सरकार मरीज़ को विदेश में इलाज के लिए भेजती और लगभग $2300 के साथ रहने-खाने और सफर का खर्च देती थी ! अगर कोई कार ख़रीदता, तो सरकार उसकी कीमत का 50% देती थी ! पेट्रोल की कीमत लगभग $0.14 प्रति लीटर थी ! लीबिया पर कोई बाहरी कर्ज़ नहीं था, और देश के पास लगभग 150 अरब डॉलर का रिज़र्व था (जो बाद में दुनिया में फ्रीज़ कर दिया गया) ! अगर पढ़ाई के बाद किसी को नौकरी नहीं मिलती, तो सरकार तब तक औसत सैलरी देती थी ! तेल की कमाई का कुछ हिस्सा सीधे नागरिकों के बैंक खातों में दिया जाता था ! जिस माँ के यहाँ बच्चा पैदा होता, उसे $5000 दिए जाते थे ! 40 रोटियों की कीमत लगभग $0.15 थी ! लगभग 25% लीबियाई लोगों के पास यूनिवर्सिटी डिग्री, डिप्लोमा थे ! गद्दाफी ने दुनिया का बड़ा सिंचाई प्रोजेक्ट “ग्रेट मैन-मेड रिवर प्रोजेक्ट” शुरू किया, ताकि रेगिस्तान में भी पानी उपलब्ध हो सके ! अगर इसे “तानाशाही” कहा जाता है, तो फिर लोकतंत्र क्या है ?
