Frontier’s is an 8 hour long buggy, lacking in polish adventure that never feels like it knows what it wants to do, while Shadow Gens is 3 hours of consistent level design, evolving mechanics, balancing gameplay and spectacle brilliantly, wild

Crazy how good Shadow Generations is - like the leap in quality from Frontiers to it is insane

@SGwastooshort I know I just don’t know what the point is unless the have some kinda performance enhancement too, at the very least fix the pop-in

@SquidBytes25 Is Bowser’s Fury a mainline Mario game? Seems that fandom collectively agrees the last mainline game was Odyssey, no real confusion there

@_SplashDash In what sense is Shadow Gens not mainline though, especially since it's about as long as the game it's attached to? If they sold it on it's own, would it then be mainline in your eyes? I just don't get the logic. Generations is an EXTREMELY short game, and that's still mainline

This tweet very specially says “mainline” Sonic game I agree, Shadow Generations is fantastic, top 10 favourites, easily, but it is a companion piece to a remaster, it’s not a “mainline” game despite how great it is
SplashDash@_SplashDash

If the next mainline Sonic game really isn’t coming out until 2027 then we really don’t have any excuse for another “step in the right direction” We used to get mediocre games yearly, I really don’t think I can handle waiting 5 years between em unless they’re worth it

@GamesCage_ Shadow Generations is fantastic but also not directed by the same guy doing Frontiers, or whatever Frontiers 2 turns out to be I’m hoping for similar, if not better quality than that game, but who knows!

@_SplashDash the “step in the right directon” I feel like only applies to Frontiers, and it’s what we needed at the time. Shadow Gens was also amazing, but just short cuz its inherently added content. I do agree obv, if the next game is also “step in the right direction”then we can worry LOL

Another factor to consider is Shadow Gen’s does not have the same director as Frontiers or “Frontier’s 2” So to act like the same quality is a guarantee is stupid

I agree though, if Sonic Team take the quality of Shadow Gens and apply it to a mainline game (one longer than 3 hours) then I have no doubts it’ll be amazing

It’s an Anniversary so it’s 100% justified but I think this is the last year I can deal with Sonic looking back so much, at least until the 40th It’s not as impactful to have these look backs when every Sonic game indulges in the past so much with locales/dialogue

In 2026, we’re celebrating 35 years of speed, friendship, adventures, and being Forever Fast. Here’s to the next level! Check out the official Sonic 35th anniversary site to stay up to date on what’s ahead: bit.ly/Sonic35

@Satoru_Yand SA1/2/Heroes/Shadow all came after one another and built off their respective stories, to act like that’s the same as Frontiers is ridiculous Amy cutscene serves a purpose, her wanting to return to the adventures she had with Sonic, compared to “THATS AS POWERFUL AS DARK GAIA!!”

@_SplashDash Metal is literally in Amy’s intro cutscene as a reference to Sonic CD. Frontiers/Forces are also anniversary games. Most of Frontiers’ references are in dialogue, something SA1/2/H/Shadow 05 also do. Its use of old stages is more for not having enough time for new assets.

Nintendo crams a billion callbacks in every game, anniversary or not. But if Sega DARES even think about mentioning iconic zones or referencing previous games, its seen as a heinous sin. Someday I hope Sonic fans can get that its normal for a franchise to acknowledge its roots

@Satoru_Yand SA2 is an anniversary title, Metal in Adventure 1 is in the bg, you could miss it and nothing would be different, there’s a difference between metal in SA1 and all the callbacks in Frontiers and Green Hill/Chemical Plant/ Sky Sanctuary

@_SplashDash 1) Sonic has done callbacks in some shape/form for its entire history 2) It only feels “jarring” to you and Sonic Twitter because you have a deeper knowledge of Sonic than you do of any other franchise, so you pick up on the callbacks more than the average person does.

@PersonthePerso2 The self-indulgence is only warranted, aside from anniversary titles, if the game itself is trying to do something new/add to what it’s referencing If it has a purpose like Shadow Gen’s then I got no issue

@_SplashDash There’s a balance that these games should have that imo only really worked from like SA1-Shadow 05 where things carried over from game to game but all were distinct adventures

@_SplashDash I think it's just a major issue with a lot of the game industry, there's so much focus on anniversary "deadlines" where we HAVE to make a game celebrating the history every 5 years when the average dev cycle now is at least 2
