Trust me, the artists at these studios BEG to be able to make films like this again, but they don’t test well with white, corn-fed, Christian moms so shareholders and C-suites sanitize/merchandise/etc.
We want to make good shit, but aren’t allowed to at this level.

It's like Disney could very well be in a far better, more respectable position in the animation ranks today if they would just start making movies like this again. I don't know, I felt that Disney in the early 2000s was getting somewhere w/ rather mature stylization and lots of grit before it all just... stop.

Hardly the first one to bring it up but an issue with a lot of larger studios doing "The weird outcast" kid trope is how they strip the politics away from outcasts Aspects of race, sexuality, able bodiedness etc are removed to be as marketable as possible now
