ARMY for Palestine@ARMY4Palestine·
This International Workers’ Day we stand with workers across the globe, including Palestinian laborers living and working under occupation, apartheid and ongoing genocide. For Palestinians the conditions of occupation shape every aspect of working life. Most of them must navigate multiple military checkpoints simply to reach their jobs, facing long waits, intrusive searches, and sudden closures of checkpoints sometimes even deprive them of income without notice. About 160,000 Palestinians in the West Bank relied on work permits issued by Israeli authorities to provide for their families before 2023. Since the escalation of the genocide, these permits have been heavily restricted or withdrawn altogether, leaving countless workers without a source of livelihood. The marginalization of Palestinian workers is not new. Its roots trace back to the period of British rule, when parts of the Zionist movement promoted exclusionary labor practices such as “Hebrew Labor”. These policies sought to replace Palestinian Arab workers with an exclusively Jewish workforce in key sectors like construction. This was part of a wider effort to restructure the economy in ways that sidelined the indigenous population, stripping Palestinian communities not only of employment but also of long-standing economic stability. Despite these challenges, Palestinian workers continue to persevere. Through rebuilding, working under hardship, and maintaining their presence on the land, their labor becomes an expression of resistance and determination. Their struggle is inseparable from that of workers everywhere, it is part of a shared global fight for fair conditions, dignity, and equal rights. May Day is rooted in the demand for safe, dignified labor for all. Supporting Palestinian workers is part of a broader commitment to stand with all those facing exploitation and injustice worldwide.
