Marco Rubio is blatantly and shamelessly lying when he says the US will not attach any security guarantees to the cession of the Donbas. For Zelenskyy, there is absolutely no reason to lie on this existential issue – any false statement would massively damage his country, jeopardize international support, and only play into Putin's hands. The Ukrainian president knows this better than anyone. The one systematically distorting reality here is Rubio himself. Rubio belongs to Team Trump, which lies more than it tells the truth on a daily basis. Instead of honest diplomacy, they are parroting Russian propaganda: first end the war by having Ukraine do exactly what Putin demands – cede the Donbas – and then perhaps sometime afterward offer vague "guarantees" that are worthless anyway because Trump signed them. This is not a policy of peace; it is capitulation under the guise of "realism." Rubio accuses the attacked party of lying while he himself presents Putin's demands as a neutral negotiating position. Rubio, go and wipe up the shit in the Capitol that the Russian delegation left everywhere.
