But if they repent, perform prayers, and pay alms-tax, then set them free. Indeed, Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

No one is defending it because those people didn't demand for Sharia law. It's a propaganda! I don't know why you people aren't seeing it! What we're defending is how they're using Sharia to justify terrorism because under Sharia, terrorism is Haram!
