Though that open source software package might be free, the expertise required to operate it effectively isn’t. And, one way or another, acquiring that expertise will cost you.

Yes! Thank you for making this point -- I can't believe I forgot to include it. ✨Junior engineers make senior engineers better at their jobs.✨ Teaching is part of learning. Explaining your choices will make choices better.
Gergely Orosz@GergelyOrosz

Consider that hiring a new grad or junior engineer makes the senior engineers better: by forcing them to explain seemingly trivial stuff (that often turns out to be not as trivial!), look at things from a different POV and grow as a mentor/leader. Plus consider the business more!

Free idea: instead of parties, sponsor childcare at big conferences. I would remember and love that brand way more than if you gave me a free drink.

I know it's a tar pit idea but... I'm surprised there's no music-centric social experience online at any meaningful scale.

Oh god, I hated this thread. But I'm already over quota today, so I'll just drop a link to "Choose Boring Culture": charity.wtf/2023/05/01/cho… Your job is NOT to make work "fun". Your job is to make work succeed in a healthy way. People bring the fun, if they feel safe and engaged.
Tara Viswanathan@TaraViswanathan

(2/8) Fun (and culture) cannot be outsourced. You cannot delegate “culture carriers”. You (the CEO) are the ultimate culture carrier. It has to come from you. ppl do not take “culture events” seriously if the CEO does not run it (or worse, doesn’t show up). You set the tone.

I want to classify a CSV of strings using an LLM. Is there a simple interactive tool that will let me try different prompts? Or an easy github repo somewhere? Asking for journalism students trying to solve a reporting problem.

@jkakar My frustration is mostly with the fact that TypeScript is purely compile time vs. run time, and if you assert something that is untrue, it will fail at run time.

@cubesebuc Mostly structural typing fits in my head. I’ve been writing a bunch of code to represent acyclic graphs and traverse and transform them. I haven’t been Rick rolled yet, but it’s still early days so let’s see. 😅

I’m enjoying Typescript quite a bit. It can get a bit hairy at times, but it also mostly seems to fit in my head (in a way that, for example, Python’s type annotations never have).

@jeffreywescott I highly doubt it. Also, why should I trust them to serve me “half” the ads when they’ve been lying to advertisers and Wall Street about their numbers?

Like, am I the only one who hates ads to this extent? Or would they double / triple / 10x their premium subscriber base with a “no ads” option? Have they done market research here?

I can’t believe they’re going to start charging new users $1 instead of just letting people pay for NO ads. Half ads? For $8? This is stupid.

would folks be interested in some kind of “get print copies of every zine julia has ever written" product? (right now there's a 13-pack for sale on the store, but it doesn't include print copies of all the free zines)

The part of the story where OpenAI has to make an email client to compete with Gmail/Bard lockin. Thereby fulfilling @jwz maxim that all software grows until it contains an email client.
