🚨 JUST IN: Atlético Madrid hit out at VAR and demand explanations from the CTA.
There is frustration at the club with the refereeing against Barcelona has continued to grow in the hours following the LaLiga clash at the Metropolitano.
The anger within both the club and the squad is significant over the decision not to send off Barcelona’s Gerard Martín, and over referee Busquets Ferrer’s call; initially showing a red card, then downgrading it to yellow after consulting VAR.
As a result, Atlético have officially requested a formal explanation from the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) regarding the different criteria applied in similar situations.
The CTA itself had stated just a few matchdays ago, in a similar incident during Betis vs Rayo, that Betis player Valentín should have been sent off for a challenge on Ratiu; an action comparable to the one involving Gerard Martín and Almada.
At Atlético, they say that “it is impossible to compete when you are told one set of rules and others are applied.” They also add that “VAR is supposed to be used only for clear and obvious errors—this is what is explained to players, coaches, and directors, but then it is applied differently.
The club also pointed out that “VAR referees end up harming their colleagues; hopefully they would defend them the way we do.”
At the Metropolitano, there is a belief that they have suffered clear refereeing errors in two consecutive matchdays, coincidentally against Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Atlético believe there is a real bias visible when it comes to these two teams. They stress that they have always shown respect toward referees, without issuing statements calling them a corrupt organization, as others have done.
The club is now waiting for the official review of this matchday to see whether it confirms the criteria previously stated (in Betis-Rayo), which was not applied in Atlético vs Barcelona.
Within the club, there is also confusion over how Busquets Ferrer described Gerard’s challenge as reckless, yet still changed the red card to a yellow.
Atlético fully support Simeone’s comments, in which he said they expect the CTA to properly explain what happened in this incident.
