@david_nix Yeah well usually my experience is the local is slower because the hardware is way less powerful, but you mentioned on laptop so I figured the same. So sounds like a win/win then. Faster and better (and private)? Was it really running on laptop or your new GPU beast?

@dalew Way faster on local but that's to be expected because no internet hops.

Is Cloud AI a scam? I was running some evals Local qwen models 27b and 9b right off my laptop. Simple data extraction. Here's a pile of text, give me JSON plz. My local models passed evals 100%. Switched to Openrouter. Exact same models... or so I thought. Several evals failed. So what gives? Did they quantize more than advertised?

Has anyone ever had an Acceptable Use Policy violation not disappear? When I click "read more" it takes me back to this same Google Console page. Over an over. No explanation as to what the violation is. But, I did have some violations for previous projects. Turns out, you shouldn't terraform project creation. Immediately flagged as a violation. I appealed but then decided just delete those projects and start over. Could it be lingering from those old, long dead projects?

@david_nix when you get your GPU running in a good state, do you have any plans to try and keep it working 24/7 (and hopefully paying for itself eventually)?

I shelled out for an rtx 6000 and it makes me happy. Not the hardware itself, rather knowing - No limit on tokens - My data is 100% private - Some company or gov can't turn it off

@david_nix It's been decades since I've messed around with hardware, minus installing new RAM in a laptop. I'll stay away. Good luck it's a good fight. :)

Business Idea AI Workstations as a Service Because they are a royal pain Dozens of little nuances you have to get right. I only build PCs like once every 10 years, so forgot everything. I made only one mistake (so far) - bought the wrong NVMe HDD. I need one WITHOUT a heatsink. I thought, "heatsink sounds like a good idea." But this motherboard already has one. So my hdd is too thicc and won't fit. So now I await the mailman and must delay the Grand Powering On. In the meantime, I pray to the PC gods for their favor.

Local AI is more expensive than the cloud. I know that. You know that but The benefit is threefold. Psychological. I can burn tokens all the live long day without dreading an invoice at the end of the month. It's irrational. But hey, that's human nature. Privacy. I know exactly where my data is going. Instead of "ZDR, trust me bro" API Stability. Because compute is so limited, clouds will deprecate old models in a heartbeat, forcing you to drop everything and upgrade. Annoying AF. Bonus 4th benefit Once OpenAI and Anthropic go public, bye-bye subsidies.

@david_nix I think most NVIDIA GPU were $3 per hour, @HotAisle has an AMD GPU for $2 per hour one I've been using sometimes, but it was definitely trickier to run non-LLM models on AMD GPU
