Litchi cultivation in Bihar spans approximately 36,000 hectares, with Muzaffarpur alone accounting for nearly 40% of this area. Consequently, Muzaffarpur’s litchi is not merely a fruit; it is a vital pillar of North Bihar’s rural economy, the livelihoods of lakhs of people, and the region's identity.
Decline in production and exports for the third consecutive year has become a matter of serious concern for farmers, orchard owners, traders, and the thousands of laborers associated with this industry.
Unfortunately, despite this crisis, there is no visible special assistance from the Bihar government for farmers, nor are there any concrete initiatives to boost litchi exports and marketing. Despite being one of the state's most prestigious agricultural products, the litchi industry today suffers from neglect.

मुजफ्फरपुर की विश्वप्रसिद्ध शाही लीची के लिए 2026 का सीजन पिछले कई वर्षों में सबसे खराब साबित हुआ। बिहार लीची एसोसिएशन के अनुसार जिले में इस वर्ष केवल 30,000 टन लीची का उत्पादन हुआ, जबकि 2025 में यह लगभग 65,000 टन और 2024 में 70,000 टन था। कभी मुजफ्फरपुर अकेले 1.2 लाख टन तक लीची उत्पादन के लिए जाना जाता था। स्थिति और गंभीर तब हो गई जब स्टिंक बग के प्रकोप, ओलावृष्टि और अत्यधिक तापमान के कारण लगभग 5,000 टन लीची बर्बाद हो गई। यानी 30,000 टन उत्पादन में से केवल 25,000 टन लीची ही बाजार तक पहुंच सकी। उत्पादन में गिरावट का सीधा असर कारोबार पर पड़ा। एक समय ₹800 करोड़ से अधिक का लीची कारोबार करने वाला मुजफ्फरपुर इस वर्ष महज ₹300 करोड़ तक सिमट गया। हालांकि कम उत्पादन के कारण ए-ग्रेड लीची का भाव ₹120-140 प्रति किलो तक पहुंच गया, लेकिन इससे किसानों और व्यापारियों के कुल नुकसान की भरपाई नहीं हो सकी। निर्यात के मोर्चे पर भी हालात अच्छे नहीं रहे। एपीडा के आंकड़ों के अनुसार 2024 में 550 टन, 2025 में 448 टन और 2026 में केवल 353 टन लीची विदेश भेजी गई, जो पिछले तीन वर्षों में सबसे कम है। खाड़ी देशों और मध्य-पूर्व में जारी तनाव ने भी निर्यात को प्रभावित किया। बिहार में कुल 36,000 हेक्टेयर में लीची की खेती होती है, जिसमें लगभग 40% हिस्सा अकेले मुजफ्फरपुर का है। ऐसे में लगातार तीसरे वर्ष उत्पादन और निर्यात में आई गिरावट न केवल किसानों बल्कि पूरे उत्तर बिहार की अर्थव्यवस्था के लिए चिंता का विषय है।

Bela Industrial Area in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, started with 150 machines in mid 2023 and now has approximately 10,000 machines. It is India's largest bag manufacturing cluster, with factories producing 7 lakh bags monthly. Every mall today has a Bihar produced bag. VIP suitcases and trolleybags are manufactured here. Factories here also do contract manufacturing for brands like Zudio.

We got all the industrial electrical equipment installed, and the machines are in place. We have started hiring stitching tailors in Bihar .. as on date 25 machines have been fully installed and are ready to use with all the necessary infrastructure required for a factory. Thank you all of you and people of Bihar for blessing, in less than a week we have done all the setup. All our legal formalities also completed. Today is my last day in Bihar , I will be back in 15 days for more expansion of machines. Jai Bihar Jai Bharat. 🇮🇳
