@decaposphere @ThePrimalDino He doesn't see the vision. Venus is not pretentions like that 😔 x.com/i/status/20485…

You are assuming I meant living on the surface (which is a hellscape, with pressures 92 times that of Earth and temperatures high enough to melt lead) -- no. From the data with have on Venus (provided by the late USSR) it actually goes to show that in the upper levels of the atmosphere (50 to 60km off the surface) the PSI and temperatures are comparable to that of Earth. Same goes with gravity -- there is a reason Venus is often called Earth's twin, and subsequently, its surface gravity is 91% of Earth's. You might think of the issue of radiation, but despite Venus lacking a magnetic field, the heavy atmosphere provides ample protection. (The dense atmosphere of CO2 above the "50 km habitable zone" could shield humans from solar and interstellar radiation just as well as Earth's atmosphere shields us on the surface.) The only issue that remains is the lack of oxygen (and the fact Venus's clouds contain sulfuric acid), both of which could be solved with a light spacesuit (for oxygen supply and to provide protection from the literal acid clouds) -- nothing like the pressurized spacesuit used on the Moon. Meaning, on a Venus cloud city, one would not need to worry about gravity, radiation, pressure, or temperature. Instead, to walk on the outside of this city, they would merely need a simple suit to provide them oxygen (coated in some acid resistant material).

My personal opinion is that the first crewed Mars landing shouldn’t be on any portion of the planet that might end up underneath an ocean. Terraforming isn’t a question of if, but how long it will take, and I don’t want to see our equivalent of Apollo 11 drowned under an ocean.

@ThePrimalDino @CausticMouse_ You also need to create a magnetic field around mars to stop solar winds from stripping away the atmosphere as soon as you make it

@CausticMouse_ Venus needs a change in its rotation and axial told, most of its atmosphere removed, and oceans shipped in, before it is habitable. Mars merely needs to have the atmosphere thickened and heated up, and it’s ready to go

@JosephMorris21 @50YearsAgoLive It seems to be taken pre convention and nomination so it makes sense that an incumbent had a plurality, he was the one with the best odds of even being in the election. The fact that only 9/32 picked the incumbent shows that he was still pretty screwed though

@50YearsAgoLive Someone explain why a plurality said Ford at this point in time? My assumption was Ford was considering a dead man walking until the Playboy interview controversy

The San Antonio Star (Texas) asks 32 nationally-renowned physicists who they think will win this year’s Presidential election. 9 say Gerald Ford; 4 say Ronald Reagan; 5 say Jimmy Carter, and the other 14 give various answers.

The North Carolina Zoo has been working on its new Asia Continent expansion for years. The exhibit is all built, the animals are there, and they're all ready to go - except for one thing. The Zoo is dependent on state grant funding. And since Republicans in the state legislature have failed to pass a state budget for almost a year, the zoo cannot hire the employees it needs to open the Asia Continent exhibit safely. So it remains closed to the public. 🐘

Shoutout to John Thune and Roy Cooper for looking like the most ‘West Wing’ coded politicians ever. I mean seriously, they look like they were manufactured in a lab to be characters on The West Wing.

@ORC1110 @rep_favorite One-off polls that are very early in campaigning season have a habit of over representing 3rd party support Also Dan Osborne isn’t a dem, he’s an independent. Sure he may side with Dems on policy a little more than he does republicans but he still varies on a lot

@Tyre_94 NC, at least, doesn’t have a depopulated coast because of that, it’s just that the entire coast except Wilmington is sheltered by the outer banks Infact, some of the area was so inhospitable and unpopulated that ex slaves we’re who settled it, such as in the great dismal swamp

@BasedIllinoisan If Andersons voters split 2/3rds for Carter and 1/3rd for Reagan, Carter gets 82 electoral votes, flipping ME, ME-01, TN, MA, and AR 3/4ths Carter and 1/4th Reagan gets you DE, ME-02, NY, and VT as well, putting Carter up to 130, surpassing Dukakis’s showing

Truth nuke: Reagan's 1980 victory, while decisive, was far from the pure landslide it looks like on paper. Had John B. Anderson not been part of the equation, Carter's 1980 showing would've at least been better than Dukakis' in 1988.
