what the software doomers don’t realize is that even if these companies start building their own version of open source projects or some SaaS, they are just increasing the amount of software that needs to be maintained.
If you are turning a OSS project to your own software, you are turning work that n people are maintaining for n^4 people to 1 person maintaining for n-n^2. Now multiply this by 3-5 ported applications and now you have a completely different engineering management problem.
using AI for green-fielding is amazing, maintaining that software at scale is a different story

I always think about how impossible it was to imagine the software landscape as it was even just 4 years ago during the pre-google era. Putting videos and live streaming content use to be a “weird” concept, now it’s the norm. Imagine trying to build twitch in assembly. I think it is entirely possible that something similar might happen. We may be heading into a world where software becomes unbelievably even more sophisticated and vast than it is today.

A pretty realistic take. Whether you find it grim depends if you are building a startup to take on an incubent or are an incubent wanting to avoid just this

@GergelyOrosz my guess is that lot of those vendors go under as a few of them and a bunch of new startups or the labs create far more general elegant solutions that solve for the same problems that the vendors do but maybe in much larger bundles etc
