At the beginning of the year, I went silent.
I was frantically trying to get my older brother out of a Moroccan jail. I wish it were a joke but it isn’t. At the end of February, my brother disappeared without a trace. The last lead pointed to Morocco. A few days later, I received an ominous message:
"Your brother has been detained and is now in a Moroccan prison." Over the last few months, I’ve discovered that my brother a Polish citizen who has never even been to the U.S. was approached, entrapped, and lured to Morocco by a convicted, paid DEA “informant.” He’s now imprisoned under horrific conditions, awaiting extradition to the U.S. on conspiracy charges. There’s no physical evidence against him nor was he caught in possession of anything. I’ve flown to Morocco four times, hired both local and American lawyers, involved the embassy, spent a fortune, and tried everything I could. In Morocco, I was followed by DEA agents, put under surveillance and even strip searched at the prison. It’s been a nightmare for my family. Initially, he was crammed into a cell with 16 men a space built for 8 surrounded by rats and cockroaches, using a hole in the floor as a toilet. Eventually, he was moved to the worst part of the prison, sharing a tiny cell with violent criminals. All sleeping on the floor, some by the toilet. After I intervened, he was transferred to isolation in a maximum security wing, where he now shares space with Lee Murray. (Lee Murray the former UFC fighter who fought Anderson Silva was behind one of the world’s biggest cash heists. He’s been imprisoned in Morocco for almost 20 years under brutal conditions, while many of his co-defendants have already been released.) My brother has been in isolation ever since. We don’t know when the extradition will happen. He hasn’t had a chance at due process and I thought it was “innocent until proven guilty.” His health has seriously deteriorated. He has lost over 20kg, recently fainted and doctors have now discovered something the size of a golf ball on his lungs. In the past, a man with active tuberculosis was placed on his wing, and the medical care is close to nonexistent. I paid for an American lawyer to fly to Morocco to help speed up the process in the U.S., but he was denied access to my brother. The reason? Unknown My brother has now been imprisoned for almost six months without trial, without access to his lawyer and without a clear timeline for extradition. He’s being punished before being found guilty of anything. That’s not just a legal problem it’s a human rights violation. Targeting a foreign citizen using conspiracy laws, while denying due process, legal access, and humane treatment, is a textbook case of what Mandela would have called “the abuse of legal systems to suppress the powerless.” It’s been a tough six months for him and for our family.
