There are moments in Gaza when suffering becomes so ordinary that people stop asking for solutions. They begin asking only for the smallest relief. A little less pain. A child who sleeps through the night. When I entered the clinic that morning, I noticed a young woman carrying a baby so small that I could not tell whether the child was a newborn or simply made tiny by hardship. When her turn came, she gently placed the baby on my desk and said: “I want any cream you have.” Any cream. Not a specific medicine. Not a particular treatment. Just anything. She uncovered the baby and showed me the severe rash covering much of the child’s fragile skin. “I treat the baby with whatever free creams I can find in clinics,” she explained. “Anything helps.” As she spoke, I noticed something else. The baby was not wearing a diaper. Only pieces of cloth. I asked why. “I can’t afford diapers,” she replied calmly. “I wash these and use them again.” Then she added that they were living in a tent and that her husband had suffered a serious foot injury and was unable to work. “I’m not asking for much,” she said. “I only want a cream.” But what caught my attention most was not the rash. It was the malnutrition. The baby was severely underweight. The kind of malnutrition that is visible before any examination even begins. So I asked the mother whether she had noticed. She nodded. “Yes, I know.” Then she said something I cannot forget: “When the baby gets older, things will get better.” Not because she truly believed it. But because hope was cheaper than treatment. And treatment was something she could no longer afford. That was the moment that broke me. Not the tent. Not the poverty. Not even the illness. But the fact that this mother had lowered her expectations so much that she no longer dreamed of proper medical care, diapers, or adequate nutrition. She came asking for the smallest thing she could imagine. A tube of cream. Any cream. Something that might make the baby hurt a little less. The baby could not have been more than five months old. Too young to understand war. Too young to understand poverty. Yet already carrying both on that tiny body. There is something profoundly cruel about a world in which a mother’s greatest hope for her child is no longer a better future. Only a little less suffering tonight. #WoundedGaza

@Samar0256860038 Literally the first word in the test: Arab. Be proud of your Arabian ancestry. Why are you scared to be Arab? Does your history frighten you? I’m sure the genocide of North Africa wasn’t that bad.

@Cheeziswin i agree, I just think it's better to talk about these things generally and instead promote healthy eating/habits/people rather than making a sick person into a spectacle

@elfbitck but then, like I said when it comes to societal views, being skinny is seen as "healthy." if no one calls it out, you get very little push back on the people insisting she's not anorexic because you cant see her thigh bones. there's not an easy or simple solution overall

@Cheeziswin i think we can both agree she should be out of the public eye rn and hopefully those around her can help her with recovery :( i hope you can recover too and have a good rest of your day ❤️

@elfbitck that's fair, and I agree. i don't think she is responsible - if not her it would be other people. but as horrible as the situation is, she is a public figure. at the very least she or someone on her team needs to be more opaque about the danger she is in.

@Cheeziswin Yeah ofc but also triggers are bad enough when it's just friends/family talking about your body, it's gotta be so difficult when it's thousands of people constantly:( ik what it's like to be pushed further into it so can't help but defend her bc none of this is helpful

@elfbitck I don't think she is in her right mind or rational. I know what a lack of food does to your brain and body. Sometimes, it does require an outside force, I am more furious with those around her than herself. There just comes a POINT where you can't avoid some of the blame as well.

@Cheeziswin I just think that someone who's clearly struggling v badly shouldn't have to shoulder all of society's issues and be responsible for other people's body image when they clearly can't even handle their own issues

@elfbitck yes, for the USER, an ED functions the exact same as an addiction. it abuses the same chemicals in the brain. My issue is impact. everyone knows heroin is bad. we understand that. no one is saying "heroin is healthy actually." the same can NOT be said for being skinny.

@Cheeziswin ok but we can agree that she's not thinking/acting properly bc she is very sick, physically and mentally? and that it should be up to people who are not sick to make that call?? severe malnourishment makes you do stupid things and she needs help, not being blamed for others eds??

@elfbitck that is to say: if I saw myself and my body being used as thinspo for hundreds of other girls to use as encouragement to starve themselves to death, I WOULD BE WRAPPING IT THE FUCK UP?

@Cheeziswin so you should know that it's the same thought patterns behind addiction and eating disorders? it's all mentally ill obsession to some extent. I'm really sorry for what you're going through, I just don't think it would be your fault if you trigger someone

@elfbitck everyone assumes anyone who criticizes someone with a disorder just couldn't possibly understand. did Not spend this morning curled over the toilet to hear people say that I just can't understand what I don't have ))): like y'all a joke

@Cheeziswin its actually not that different from an eating disorder and anyone who's struggled with an ed would tell you as much. you obviously have no idea what you're talking about so mb should not comment on sth so serious

@elfbitck can we understand how an addiction to a drug is different than an eating disorder, and the entirely different societal concepts surrounding addiction (socially vilified and undesirable) and SKINNY (socially sought after and encouraged to an unhealthy degree)

@Cheeziswin was Amy Winehouse promoting her addiction just for struggling publicly? after all she said she was fine and kept performing until the end. genuinely just such a gross and cruel way to think

@elfbitck she is a grown woman who makes her own choices and is in charge of her own team. stop shifting the blame. I never said her just existing is flaunting anything. Her acting like her body and behavior are normal and desirable while ignoring the impact she has is the issue

@greymatterwrite @Cheeziswin Again, how is she encouraging anything? Is she posting wieiad's or waist measurements or saying being mentally ill is really cool and awesome? Or is she just existing, fulfilling contractual obligations, and being made into a public spectacle?

@isishottie @ZPinto57464 people call everything a body check, I hate how this term entered the mainstream and nobody knows wtf it means. but seriously I hope she can get away from people constantly commenting on her body, I can't imagine how triggering it must be :(

@Cheeziswin Weird how the mentally ill person is acting irrationally, grow tf up. Her management and people around her shouldn't be putting her on stage like this but she's not encouraging anything just by existing as a disordered person

@elfbitck Flaunting her body as desirable and healthy to her fans while not being upfront about her ED encourages other people with EDs to starve themselves. If she stopped lying to everyone about what she's going through, people wouldn't be so angry at her behavior.
