@rdviii Compared to United States. There are enormous number of public toilets in Japan, and to top it all off they are clean

Japan still has a horrible problem with toilet accessibility, but in big train stations, stores and malls they are adding adequately large individual toilets and calling them "multipurpose toilets", with multiple icons, often with ostomates facilities and changing tables.

A few months ago I was in a service station with only male/female toilets. I saw an elderly man lead his dementia-suffering wife to the door of the ladies’, patiently explain step-by-step how to use it and stand outside looking sad and worried as she went in alone.

She and Caltech's Carver Mead basically invented the academic discipline of designing chips, and the rules by which we design them, by coauthoring one of the most important tech books of the 20th century.

Currently sitting in the bank. Every employee in sight, over 20 people, is a woman, except the security guard and one guy at a supervisor's desk. (Are there any branch banks in the U.S. that still have this many floor employees, of any gender or age?)

Interested in the *very* earliest days of distributing computing systems? Come learn about @farber's DCS. A most enjoyable 80 minutes, if I do say so myself. ccrc.keio.ac.jp/50dcs/

First time I've heard him state such a goal; if he said *when* the 1M/day mark is expected to be met, I missed it. All 35M old people by end of July would require hitting that beginning late this month. (I suspect only 70% will take it, anyway.)

"Vaccines are the key to fighting the ongoing infections," Suga told reporters in Tokyo on Friday evening. "It will be crucial to accelerate vaccinations" as infections from COVID-19 variants have been increasing in major cities. s.nikkei.com/3tALqB3

Historians of computing, remind me – I once heard of a clever but very clumsy programmer who kept dropping his cards. He eventually put a couple lines of code into the top of each punch card so it didn't matter if they were inserted in unsorted sequence. Is this possible/factual?

Moved dinner time back to 4pm. Just put the bird in the oven. Glaze: garlic, soy sauce, honey, fresh crushed anise, plum liqueur, black pepper, yuzu kosho.

My best guess is still that he goes to Mar a Lago for Christmas, and never returns to the White House. I think he doesn't want the humiliation of meeting Biden, and is too much of a coward to force a confrontation on whether he has to move out.
