@profsamperry It would not. We already have about 45x the number of prospective adoptive families as we do infants available. And over 90% of women denied abortion choose to parent, rather than relinquish. The availability of adoptive families is irrelevant to those making pregnancy decisions.

@LizSzabo Depends on the type of data, but for counting abortions or demographic information on abortion patients, you’ll want the Guttmacher or SFP numbers that @RachelFey linked.

@gesisson Good to know! What is the most complete source of abortion data then? ANSIR?

@LizSzabo CDC abortion data doesn’t include CA, NY, and MD, states that provide a lot of abortions and also most later abortion care in the country.

@gesisson What's wrong with using CDC data on abortion? The page that Alice cited says 93% of abortions are in the first trimester. Are you saying that is wrong?

According to a survey by Pew Research Center in late 2021, a whopping 44 percent of childless males say it is unlikely or not at all likely that they'll have children someday. Of those, 50 percent simply (and selfishly) offer a simple reason: they just don’t want kids. (thread)

@corsent Possibly, but I’d want to look in more detail about what service providers it includes!

@sydneybrokeit @corsent They use geofencing to market their services to vulnerable pregnant people at abortion clinics, public hospitals, addiction treatment centers.

Tweaking my syllabus and seeking readings on adoption! I already assign an amazing paper by Tina Rulli but would love to assign more and am especially interested in arguments against adoption.

.@gesisson’s research for Relinquished “deepened my understanding of how adoption, while typically viewed as a noble, feel-good form of family building, actually hinges on the trauma of family separation,” shared NPR’s Schuyler Swenson. npr.org/2024/06/18/nx-…

@corsent IDK if it’s ok for me to add, but periods of consent revocation in the US are (on average) much worse than that. Most states only allow 2 weeks or less. There are a few that consider consent irrevocable upon execution or when HAPs take physical custody of a child.

@corsent @gesisson Thanks. I will look it up. I do think adoption can be a good way to form a family though I have learned a lot from you

@RudyOwensMemoir @kathrynajoyce My point is that adoption as an institution is conservative even if it isn’t recognized as such — it’s precisely a call for progressive/left of center electeds to recognize the ways it’s out of sync with their values. Having bipartisan support doesn’t make it less conservative.
