Today, the Ogun State Governor @DapoAbiodunCON will launch hundreds of electric bikes (okada; video attached) as part of the Phase II of the Ogun e-mobility programme which is aimed to significantly lower the cost of public transportation in the State. Here are some vital information about the operational system of the new transport chain that should answer the most pressing questions and concerns: 1- The bikes are fully electric. On a full charge, a battery set will travel a minimum of 75kms before it drains to zero. They also come with 4 years of service guaranteed. 2- Worries about charging due to our power supply issues? The owners/riders will NEVER have to worry about charging because the State government has created well equipped service/charging stations called swap-stations in strategic places in Abeokuta--where the pilot phase will begin with 72bikes. These service stations are already connected to uninterrupted power supply. The charging and battery maintenance will be done by experts as part of the after-purchase service. At these locations, riders/owners can walk in and have their batteries swapped in 10min once it's 5% or below. The company caters for the charging and battery care, so every maintenance issue related to that is not the drivers concern. All transactions will also be done online via an app. No paper money. A swap of the (minimum) 75km range battery set will cost N1,250. Research by MoU has shown that the regular round-the-clock Okada rider does close to 150km a day in Abeokuta, with average petrol cost of #4,000 per day to cover that maximum distance. Based on this, the commercial e-rider would only need two battery sets per day, which comes down to a total cost of #2,500. Which equates to 40% daily cost saving. 3. There's option for outright and instalmental (financed) purchase with a down payment. The rest of the payment will be spread over a period of 2-4 years. 4. After the pilot phase, the idea will be replicated in other districts across the state on a phase by phase basis. If you have more questions, you can ask in the replies here.
