Congrats to @NickBaumann on the new WashPo gig! I can't say I fully grasp the difference, but the new title is way better. Here's hoping you have the resources to do great things.

@joelrubin Oh, so *that's* what it is -- congrats, Joel! I hope the fun-to-frustration ratio is many times better than it was in you last gig.

I arrived at the LA Times straight out of j-school in 2003 for what was supposed to be a 6-week summer internship. Nearly 22 years and a whole lot of words later, I've decide to leave the paper at the end of the week. It's been a wild, fulfilling ride. Excited for what's next.

The LA Times unveiled a new feature today: AI-generated summaries and counterpoint to opinion pieces. So here is one where the AI generated an argument against a column calling for more regulation of AI: latimes.com/opinion/story/…

Don”t miss @DavidLauter⁩’s final ⁦@latimes⁩ column, which is as clear-headed as all the others. No gimmicks or overwrought takes. He’s one of the best because he breaks down what he knows and doesn’t know with clarity, wisdom and humility. latimes.com/politics/newsl…

@Alex_Major1 Candidates being taken out of context is a much different issue with a totally different set of "how to guard yourself" points. Again, the example here was just an illustration of an important point about how deepfakes can insert a small lie into legit content.

@jcahealey I read the whole thing, Jon. You gave ONE example and it just so happens to be Kamala? Really? You should have included all the times President Trump was taken out of context . Yes, it's not the same as a "deepfake" per se, but the implication is similar.

@Alex_Major1 Wait, what? Did you read past the opening example? The story wasn't about *who* is doing deepfakes, it's about how to recognize them.

@jcahealey That was a VERY One-Sided article! What about all the lies and speeches/interviews of President Trump that are deliberately taken out of context? What about watching President Trump descending a slippery ramp carefully, only to be labeled as "unwell"? Check your BIAS!

This trove of hacked data supposedly has the SSN of every person in the U.S., along with those of many dead Americans. And the info is now out there for free in a hackers' forum. latimes.com/business/story…

It’s no secret that Californians pay more than the rest of the country for many goods and services. What’s less well known, though, is that consumers may be paying higher prices than their *neighbors* pay. latimes.com/business/story…
