TFW a company integrates the free open source software you spent years developing into a commercial retail product, and then directs their customers to you for support queries.

Of course an enormous amount of work remains to understand the relationship between population structure and recombination, among other things, and I hope the microbial popgen community can continue to adapt and build upon advances from our colleagues in human popgen. [8/8], fin

Sid was the last student to join my group before my unexpected departure from UTS @AIMI_UTS. I am delighted that he has persevered in driving his PhD research forward, and for the generous contributions of his cosupervisors, despite the difficult circumstances. [7/N]

Recombination, specifically homologous recombination, is a major driver of evolution in bacteria. But compared to de novo mutation we know very little about it, in part because the methods required to study it are poorly developed compared to standard phylogenetic inference [1/N]

Dear ABACBS members: Due to a last minute cancellation, we have a vacancy in our August seminar series - who would you like to hear from & we'll do our best to persuade them! @combine_au @abacbs

For the curious, he seems to be over the symptoms already, thankfully, and both parents are still negative by antigen test, so far. Managing isolation while on the road stinks, though he's enjoying the extra time to play minecraft!

I'm traveling in the US with wife and son, and my son has caught covid, either just before departure from Aus or on the flight despite kn95, vax etc. Is there a US-based sequencing service we can use to determine what strain he has?

This project started just before my unexpected departure from academia 1 year ago, and @mattapow has done a remarkable job of driving it forward. It turned out to be surprisingly challenging, and I am equal parts honored to have contributed and sad that I couldn't do more.

The hope is that such approaches could one day enable pandemic-scale Bayesian phylogenetics, including complex models such as those used in phylogeography and viral phylodynamics

New preprint! Together with @mattapow and @m4ment we demonstrate feasibility of Bayesian phylogenetic inference using trees embedded in n-dimensional hyperbolic spaces. This approach has some properties that could eventually enable pandemic-scale statistical phylo... 1/n

So glad to share this work on Bayesian phylogenetics in hyperbolic space! Hyperbolic embeddings change trees from discrete objects into continuous parameters, giving “nearby” trees. arxiv.org/abs/2206.08044
