For about a month now, parents of children with Duchenne syndrome have been protesting in Georgia, demanding life-saving medication for their kids. While the government largely ignored them, and at times even mocked them, students from Ilia State University, one of the main targets of the Georgian Dream regime, launched a campaign called “One GEL for Kids.” The campaign started just yesterday and has already raised around 450,000 GEL in less than 24 hours. This is especially striking in the context of Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s statement that the government cannot fund the medication because it is “people’s money” and therefore must be spent “responsibly.” A remarkably cynical argument coming from a government whose high-ranking officials are themselves increasingly facing corruption charges.
