i was at dinner with a few friends last weekend when the check came. nothing expensive. just a normal dinner. one guy at the table immediately pulled out a calculator and started figuring out exactly what he owed down to the cent. another guy laughed and said, "dude, we've all known each other for ten years. just split it evenly." the first guy refused. he said he ordered a sandwich and water. the rest of us had drinks and appetizers. for the next five minutes everyone argued over what was fair. some people thought splitting evenly is just part of being in a friend group. others thought paying for food you didn't order is ridiculous. i've been thinking about it ever since because everyone at that table genuinely believed they were the reasonable one.
