Willard will tell them to do something and they’ll do it. They follow his word as if it were a heavenly order, and uphold the law of it. Socrates most of all, as he helps with the training of the others. They don’t know any better. It’s his fault.

his childhood dog, but it was people who tore that friendship away from him. “He’s innocent.” He says this in case this really is a demon coming to punish him. Rats don’t know right from wrong — not the same way humans do — this was something he observed in taking care of them.
