Something that makes this matchup closer than it is though, are the starting pitchers. Michael Lorenzen has been neither really here nor there throughout a lot of his career. Injuries have also gotten in the way of momentum. However, he has turned into a pitcher who now throws six different pitchers with significant frequency, and there is no surprise that his recent years have seen good success in dome settings. Keider Montero on the other hand, while early in his career, leans a lot of his velocity, and nothing about his early career nor 2026 so far has convinced me that he takes true command through that fastball, or can turn it up like Paul Skenes in a big game like this. Also, let's not forget the emergence of slugger Vinnie Pasquantino, who will be licking his chops at any fastball down the middle. We saw what happened when pitching took over yesterday. Even if Italy only has this particular pitching edge for the first few innings, it could be enough to set the tone and get a lead that they can sit on. They've done this well all tournament.
