Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year, is celebrated from 13–15 April with massive street water fights, parades and family travel. It is often called the “world’s largest water fight”. During the holiday period, millions of people are on the roads, many of whom are drinking and celebrating, which leads to an increase in accidents. Speeding was the main cause of fatalities (38–42%), followed by drink-driving (27–28%). The majority of vehicles involved were motorcycles, and the peak times for accidents were in the afternoons (3–6 pm).

A massive fire has erupted in the Hattar Industrial Area of Haripur District in the Pakistani province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with strong indications that it started with an explosion or burst in a gas pipeline. Thick plumes of black smoke and huge orange flames can be seen from a distance. Video footage shows the intense fire against the evening sky.

A crash has been reported at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) after a SpiceJet aircraft clipped the wing of an Akasa Air plane. A SpiceJet Boeing 737-700 (reportedly VT-SLB) which had arrived from Leh, was taxiing at Terminal 1 when it clipped the left-hand horizontal stabiliser of a stationary Akasa Air Boeing 737 (operating flight QP 1406 from Delhi to Hyderabad). The right winglet of the SpiceJet aircraft made contact during ground movement.

A man is fighting for his life in intensive care after being brutally beaten in the Aloe Street area of Hanover Park on Tuesday (14 April 2026). According to multiple reports, he was attacked by a group of young boys who apparently mistook him for a rival gang member, using stones, large rocks and a wooden beam as weapons. There has been repeated gang-related violence in Hanover Park on the Cape Flats recently, including shootings and stone-throwing incidents in nearby streets such as Ruston Road just days ago.

On 15 April 2026, the Seoul Western District Court sentenced American YouTuber and streamer Johnny Somali (real name Ramsey Khalid Ismael) to six months of prison labour and an additional 20 days of detention. The main trigger was a video posted in October 2024, in which he could be seen kissing, twerking and performing a lap dance on the Statue of Peace in South Korea. This bronze monument honours Korean women (and others) who were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military during World War II and are often referred to as 'comfort women'. This stunt, alongside other disruptive behaviour such as harassing people in public places, resulted in charges of public nuisance (under the Minor Offences Act), obstruction of business and distribution of fabricated sexually explicit content.

A woman in Shantou, Guangdong Province, China, was filmed throwing large stacks of Hong Kong dollars (HK$1,000 notes) from the balcony of her high-rise apartment in the Star Lake City/Xinghu City complex in Longhu District. Bystanders on the street below scrambled to grab the fluttering banknotes in an event that has become known as a 'money rain'. Footage shows her repeatedly tossing handfuls or stacks of notes over the railing, while onlookers run around picking them up. She was reportedly emotionally distressed, possibly due to a serious illness affecting a family member. Officials and property management staff acted quickly to recover most of the money, with some residents turning in what they had found. They then returned it to her. Local authorities confirmed that the notes were genuine.

A large fire has broken out at Viva Energy's Geelong (Corio) oil refinery in Victoria, Australia — one of only two operational oil refineries in the country. The blaze was reported between 11 pm and midnight local time (AEST) on Wednesday, 15 April 2026 at the facility on Refinery Road in Corio. It is not yet under control, with Fire Rescue Victoria and other emergency services responding (around 10–12 vehicles at the scene). A massive fire broke out this afternoon (15 April 2026) in a densely populated slum in the Vikas Nagar area of India. Multiple LPG cylinder explosions fuelled the blaze, sending up thick black smoke that could be seen for several kilometres and destroying dozens to hundreds of makeshift huts. The fire is believed to have started due to a short circuit in the overhead electrical wires. Strong winds and the presence of flammable materials in the huts caused the fire to spread rapidly. The settlements were also in close proximity to one another. The residents are mostly poor families, including waste pickers (some of whom are from Assam), who collect rubbish for a living.

A school shooting occurred today (15 April 2026) at Aysel Çalık Middle School in the Onikişubat district of Kahramanmaraş, Turkey. An eighth-grade student, reportedly aged 16, carried out the attack using multiple handguns belonging to his father, a former police officer. He opened fire inside the school and then took his own life at the scene. Reports indicate four fatalities (three students and one teacher) and around twenty injured people, some of whom are in a critical condition. This is the second school shooting in south-eastern Turkey in two days. Yesterday, an ex-student wounded 16 people before killing himself in Siverek, Şanlıurfa province.

The KZN SAPS confirmed that a man was found dead this morning, April 14, inside an abandoned, hijacked vehicle on a gravel road near the Tugela River, en route to Nkandla. He had injured himself while handling explosives during the robbery. The crew, believed to be at least 12 people strong, got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. They hijacked four vehicles for their getaway and disarmed three security guards. They even fired shots toward the local police station, but luckily, no cops or bystanders were hit. A full manhunt is underway for the rest of them.

In the parking lot right outside the Screwfix store in Brixton, London. Undercover officers are trying to arrest a big, shirtless, bearded man suspected of dealing Class A drugs. The takedown turned into a proper scrap on the tarmac next to a black-and-orange Woodflame Drainage van, and the drugs went everywhere as they tried to arrest him.

According to reports from multiple Turkish news outlets, an armed attacker entered the Ahmet Koyuncu Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesi vocational and technical high school in the Hasan Çelebi neighborhood of the Siverek district in Şanlıurfa. The suspect, described as a 17–20-year-old male (reported as a student), opened fire randomly inside and around the school with a long-barreled firearm. According to local sources, seven to 16 people were injured, most of whom were students. Initial reports have not confirmed any fatalities.
