As I said in the past, sans the missing towed array sonar, the 🇵🇭Del Pilar-class now have better sensors than the 🇨🇳PLA Navy Type 054A frigate. But the problem is the lack of punch. Too bad it's stuck with a 76mm & 2x 25mm guns only. No missiles, no torpedoes, no CIWS. 📷MDP 2/x

🇩🇪ELEC Sonar confirmed they completed installation of Hunter 2.0 passive/active hull mounted sonar on all 3 Del Pilar-class patrol frigates of the 🇵🇭Philippine Navy as of Feb 2025. Except for lack of towed array sonar, these old ships have good sensors but lack the punch.

@MonteroMax There seems to be a ton of space in what amounts to the B position where you could put SeaRam or gun based CIWS. Too (top) heavy? And is the rear deck big enough for Aw159, with torpedoes? (Which you’d have to buy, it…)

Noticing how this administration has had very few leaks? Maybe—just maybe—that’s because Signal is more secure than the legacy systems former administrations, new national guard airmen on discord, and random law firms apparently have access to. Think about that.

This is insane… The Trump admin accidentally added the editor of The Atlantic to a Cabinet-level Signal group. They discussed strikes on the Houthis in Yemen and how the US should be repaid for restoring freedom of navigation for Europe, who does essentially nothing.

@ap_org @idreesali114 The purpose of polygraphs is to scare the crap out of people and prevent misbehavior. It’s pretty effective at that. People will self select out of the org rather than submit to such moving forward.

@idreesali114 I would be happy to speak with you on the record about polygraph matters if it's of interest for your reporting. It's noteworthy that there is no documented instance of the polygraph ever solving a federal leak investigation. My contact details are in my profile.

This is excellent and it’s no coincidence he quoted Jack Kerouac—a U.S. Merchant Mariner. Yesterday, a group of naval officers scolded me for calling the Canadian “navy” pathetic. A friend DM’d me, asking: “How do you get away with posting what you do? How do you tell allies and American Admirals to get bent?” The answer is simple: I have nothing to lose. Since the day I put on the Merchant Marine uniform (yes, we have uniforms) at the academy, I have been harassed, dismissed, laughed at and looked down upon by naval officers. On my very first ship, an admiral’s aide yelled at me for not wearing khakis like the naval reserve mariners working beside me. But their words meant nothing—because they had nothing to take from us. I run the world’s most visited maritime and naval website in the entire world, yet I receive zero invitations for ship visits, press events, or insider access from the Navy. The last time I did visit a USS ship, I had yo wait in line like a tourist for six hours. And it’s not just me. They have systematically erased the U.S. Merchant Marine from every corridor of power. •Stripped of Pentagon jobs •Shut out of think tanks •Denied free War College degrees •Excluded from veteran benefits •Barred from leadership roles—even within our own service The last four Commandants of the Merchant Marine? Naval officers. The fifth will be too. The same goes for Military Sealift Command—both uniformed and civilian leadership. When my friend a US Merchant Marine captain died on a DoD contract last year they refused to repatriate his body for weeks. He was literally shoved in the ship’s freezer. They won’t even let us call ourselves by our own name. They label us CIVMARS, stripping us of identity and erasing our history. They won’t even let us work. The U.S. Coast Guard website that issues our licenses has been broken for weeks. No urgency. No accountability. Just indifference. I know what the usual suspects will say: “Whine harder.” But this isn’t a complaint. This is freedom. I can say whatever the hell I want because they have taken everything already. They could try to arrest us all, the entire country could collapse, and it wouldn’t matter. We could survive at sea indefinitely. We have confidence because we have absolute self sufficiency. We have nothing to lose. And that makes us dangerous. If they really wanted to shut us up—and trust me, they do—they could do it in an instant. They could grant us even a fraction of the privileges they hoard for themselves. If we had something to lose, we might think twice. But they will never do that. Because we tell the truth. So to hell with being “nice.” Niceness doesn’t keep you alive in the North Atlantic. It doesn’t win wars. Jack Kerouac understood that. The Admiralty does not. And now we finally have a Maritime desk at the White House working on commercial maritime issues, guess what? They filled it with navy guys and lobbyists. Not one US Merchant Mariner. Alex is right. F being nice. You need us more than we need you so we don’t have to play your games anymore. And I’m not just talking about the Merchant Marine. This nation needs men who get ship done more than we need your fake privileges and accolades and niceties. You stripped nearly all benefits from patriotic men anyway. We have nothing left to lose except our freedom and the nation itself.

There are probably 100,000+ people in the greater DC area in the government sphere - govt employees, lawyers, lobbyists, think tanks, and NGO grifters - who are now worried about losing their jobs. They’ve got fat mortgages, Mercedes payments, club memberships, and school fees to worry about. And as they admired the diplomas on their walls and sneered at the problems of everyday Americans, they thought the grift would never end. Good riddance. And since I know some of these people, I can say that the best part of what’s coming is that these pseudo-intellectual, wannabe elites shape and build their entire identities as human beings around what their job title is, what airport lounge access they have, and what cocktail parties they get invited to. Their entire world is about to get turned upside down. And it couldn’t happen to a more odious and vapid group of people.

The US is now producing over 50,000 155mm artillery shells per month, and will produce over 100,000 shells per month by next year. The US has already tripled prewar shell production and is on track to increase it by over 600%.

@cdrsalamander Serious question: ~1500 miles from Guam to the “fight” east of Taiwan. The Taigei certainly does better than 6-7,000 mile range of Soryu. Why is that not enough? Is Guam useless as a sub base? Or based in Japan? Wouldn’t you rather have 10 Taigei by 2030? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taigei-cl…

While I have a sweet spot for diesel-electric submarines, and they are exceptional platforms for the requirements of many of our allies, that sweet spot has faded over the years when looking at what the USN needs to buy and build. Tom is--with a cold eye--exactly correct here. American requirements to "get to the fight" require first of all the ability to first cross the great oceans to our east and especially west...and then disappear...and yet cross additional distances with speed and quiet. Only SSN can do that. Our allies can fill those niche that SS can do better than a SSN, and let us cover those other mission sets.
Tom Shugart@tshugart3

Truth: "A kind assessment would be that commentators suggesting an infusion of diesel-electric submarines into the American fleet do not know what modern American submarines actually do." 👇
