How smooth a ride is FSD?
FSD just saved my phone.
I’m building a gazebo in the backyard… was using our Model Y’s rear end as a ‘table’ for reading the virtual instructions on my phone.
While looking for a tool, my wife left to go pickup my older son.
She didn’t notice my phone on the tailgate area.
I had been distracted… not really paying attention to her departure.
Suddenly, my heart dropped.
Where was my phone?
I looked in the garage, I looked in the kitchen. Surely it wasn’t on the car, right?
But I couldn’t find it!
I instructed my other son to call her while I quickly darted down the road… expecting to find my phone cracked and lying on the side of the road or in a ditch at the first turn or two out of our neighborhood.
Nothing.
I ran home, sweating and panting from the Texas heat.
As I walked in my kid had a grin.
Did he find it?
Nope… but she had.
7 minutes of driving and 4.3 miles of distance, my phone had ridden on the tailgate of our Tesla… with FSD driving.
There was a very slight magnetic pull from the phone case… but not enough to keep the phone from sliding all around… just enough to keep it from toppling over the edge.
The phone should have slid right off the car during one of the turns the car made… or each time it accelerated… even onto a highway entrance ramp.
My wife got the call from my son while going 60+ mph and exited immediately.
My son told her she was wasting her time to check the car. No way could it still be there.
Both were absolutely shocked when she found it like this.
FSD had driven the car so smooth and steady… that the phone had remained on the car the entire time.
Now for full disclosure, my wife likes to ride in ‘Chill’ mode… so perhaps that contributed. But she had moved it to ‘Standard’ before the highway.
So either way it was a small miracle.
Thank you @Tesla for building a car with an ai brain so comfortably smooth, that it saved my phone from certain destruction! @yunta_tsai @aelluswamy
