at some point dating turned into job hunting. i miss when you could lock eyes with somebody across the melons in the produce section — awkwardly introduce yourself — and see where it went. now i’m apparently expected to optimize prompts, complete training exercises, and pass a series of conversational compliance checks before anybody says hello. and let’s not even get started on ghosting. ghosted after the first message. ghosted after a few days. ghosted after the first date. ghosted after several dates. at this point, ghosting isn’t a dating behavior — it’s a stage in the process.

for those not on @bumble — the app used to require women to send the first message. then they introduced opening moves, which allowed men to answer a prompt on a woman’s profile and use that as the conversation starter. so i adapted. i started answering the prompts. putting thought into them. because i figured that was the new norm. that’s what we were all supposed to be doing now. a few weeks ago bumble finally gave me access to opening moves myself. every message i’ve received since has been: “hi” “hey” “how’s your week going?” not one answer to the prompt. that was a fascinating exercise in personal growth.
