A fertilized embryo will only implant in a female grizzly's uterus if her fat reserves are sufficient to sustain her and developing fetuses throughout winter hibernation! This means a female grizzly can essentially biologically choose whether to become pregnant or not. Amazing!

The Elk Valley accounts for less than 1% of the grizzly bear range in BC, but accounts for 33% of road mortalities and 42% of rail mortalities for grizzlies province-wide.

Resource roads can impede the life requirements of species like bull trout. Roads cross streams which means water is diverted through culverts or under bridges. These culverts regularly result in a major loss of suitable habitat as they block or restrict bull trout movements.

Roads are amongst the largest contributors to landscape fragmentation, wildlife displacement and habitat loss for a broad range of species. We must reduce the sprawling resource road network which is increasingly threatening the future of fish and wildlife in this province.

Wildsight volunteers harvested almost 2,200 pounds of apples in Kimberley & Cranbrook this year! Our 'Apple Capture' program helps people keep their fruit trees maintained if they are unable to do it themselves— helping reduce attractants that are tempting to wildlife like bears.

We wanted to wish you a Happy Halloween with a spooky feat of nature; this bleeding tooth fungus. The blood-like substance is referred to as ‘guttation’ droplets. In plants, guttation is the release of sap, but scientists don’t fully understand what causes it in fungi. Spooky!
