@CodeRed_dev Nowhere does it say that you have to stay awake for 48 hours. I've usually found a way to sleep at the venue, though.

@CodeRed_dev The difference is that with Game Jams, devs CHOOSE to give themselves the short deadlines.

@CodeRed_dev Personally, I think game jams force you to (learn to) be more efficient and direct (cut the crap). I participate in multiple game jams every year, and I'm at a point now where I can solo dev + music within 48 hours and still get enough sleep. It was a truly self-learning process.

@CodeRed_dev I never do that, I always go to sleep at normal times in a game jam. I am not productive if I stay up at night to work. That being said, I live game jams cause it's just fun to create something new and unique in just a few days

@CodeRed_dev Having 48 hours to make a game does not imply you don't sleep, when I participated to game jams I did have my 8 hours of sleep (in my bed), a good breakfast and a proper dinner as well. 😅 Also that's like once a year, it's definitely nothing like crunch.🧟

@CodeRed_dev This is the difference between work and having fun. Staying up for 48 hours to work on a small, but passionate project is not the same as being grinded down over the course of 3+ years for a game.

@CodeRed_dev As a crunch hater, I am also a proponent of sleeping a lot during game jams. I was once with a team of like-minded ppl and our jam game's pitch was that you were a bed that needed to fend off coffee and take the devs to sleep

@CodeRed_dev One 24-48 period of making a game for fun is way different than a continuous often multi-month or year crunch cycle imposed because management promised something that couldn’t realistically be delivered without crunch.

@CodeRed_dev There's a difference between a short challenge (where you don't *have* to stay awake the whole time anyway), and weeks of forced overtime and sleeping at your desk.

@CodeRed_dev That's the difference between rushing to start and rushing to finish though 🤣 Game jams rush to start, which works as motivation Crunch is rushing to finish, which causes burnout.

@CodeRed_dev You’re not a real game dev if you’re not working 12+ hours at your game dev job and then spending 6+ hours working on your portfolio for game dev. The moment you do something outside of game dev you might as well quit cause you’re clearly NOT game dev material!!! /s

@CodeRed_dev A lot of game devs love to crunch to a limited degree. The problem is that the crunch just keeps on crunching.

@CodeRed_dev I need you to understand game jams are a thing people do for FUN its a competition for FUN. This is like saying an artist is stupid for drawing for an art contest when all their other work is commission.

@CodeRed_dev to be fair, makes sense since else people would need to take an entire week off work for it. Instead of 1 or 2 recovery days. But ye, personally my brain no worky well after 6h anymore, so I just do something else.

@CodeRed_dev I like game jams. It taugh me how to take some crucial decisions in a short period of time, plus, I spend a good time with some people trying to do our best. I made games for 8 game jams in general and I don't have plans to stop. If it's not for you, dont join. Peace.

@CodeRed_dev Once you start prioritizing sleep and mental health, game jams just change forever. But I still love 'em. That's why now I take part in one month Jams or the TriJam.
