We are often misled and tricked by the media. It feels like it has become part of their job to rile us up. To create emotional response. To divide us by political association, race, gender, orientation, etc. because it turns into clicks and more consumption of their content. Look past these sources if they speak more about how you should feel about the “news” and not present the “news” as facts of what happened. Find the facts yourself by looking at multiple sources. Listen to the testimony and review the evidence. Make your own objective conclusions. For example, the facts (in response to common misinformation) include: 1) The jury included numerous minorities, including Asian, Hispanic, and Middle-Eastern people; 2) Anthony’s attorney was a private, hired lawyer, not a public defender; 3) It was and is an unwritten rule that you are only permitted under a team tent if you are part of the team/school; 4) Anthony was not part of the team/school yet went and sat in the tent anyway; 5) Eyewitnesses, including black eyewitnesses, testified Anthony was told to leave the tent multiple times and he verbally refused; 6) Multiple eyewitnesses, including black eyewitnesses, testified that Karmelo was never surrounded/ganged up/jumped in that tent; 7) Multiple eyewitnesses, including black eyewitnesses, testified Anthony put his hand inside his backpack as though he was planning to retrieve a weapon during the verbal altercation; 8) The eyewitnesses, including black eyewitnesses, in the tent testified they jokingly said that they didn’t believe he had anything in the bag because he was in Frisco, Texas; 9) Eyewitnesses said AM told Anthony to leave or he would kick his a**; 10) Eyewitnesses testified that during the verbal exchange, Anthony said “touch me and find out.” 11) Eyewitnesses testified AM went over and pushed him to make him leave the tent. 12) Eyewitnesses testified AM did not punch Anthony or make any attempt to cause serious injury to him; 13) Anthony immediately pulled his knife and stabbed AM in the chest; 14) Anthony then threw the weapon into the stands and ran; 15) Anthony admitted the stabbing to the police; 16) Even the defense’s witnesses said Anthony was in the wrong. You are free to make your own opinions about the case. But before jumping to conclusions, at least know the facts.

Had to respond to a friend who accused me of being blind to truth about the Karmelo Anthony case because of my profession. My response to him and anyone else with this mindset is as follows : “The most disrespectful comments usually start with “With all due respect.” No. I am a Black man who happens to be a police officer. My law enforcement JOB, doesn’t minimize my opinion. It actually strengthens it as I have get to see things from all perspectives while you are limited to what you are told to think as a Black person. You are conditioned to only see things through a racial lens first. The same lens I was indoctrinated to see things through until I saw the other side. Choosing logic over emotion doesn’t make me less Black or make me forget what it is to be Black. Karmelo Anthony never showed or expressed any remorse for murdering Austin Metcalf. Karmelo showed no emotion when they played the 911 call in court. Karmelo showed no emotion during the witness testimonies reliving that tragic day in full detail. Karmelo showed no emotion when pictures of Austin’s lifeless body were shown in court. Karmelo showed no emotion when Austin’s autopsy photos were shown to the jury. Karmelo broke down crying in agony while shaking uncontrollably when his guilty verdict was announced. His cries were so loud that you could hear them outside the courtroom. What does this prove? Karmelo wasn’t capable of showing sympathy or feeling empathy for anyone else but himself. He viewed taking a White kids life like it was nothing. The people around him had him fully convinced that he “dindu nuffin” wrong. He didn’t learn anything from this entire process and even down to the very last moment he still viewed himself as the victim.

Last thoughts on Karmelo Anthony before he disappears for a long time: - The defense only called 6 witnesses and rested abruptly - The only person to speak on his behalf during the punishment phase was his mother. - The defense didn’t even think to prepare him to testify on his own behalf Additionally, there were no teachers, counselors, church members, etc. willing to discuss his character in court and plead for him to have another chance at life. Nobody could vouch he was really a good kid and was going to be a contributing member of society someday. The jury heard closing statements, deliberated, found him guilty, then completed the punishment phase all in one day. In other words, there was no way to adequately defend or humanize this animal.
