Upper Egyptian Copts fulfilling their dream of doing a pilgrimage in Jerusalem. Until the ban was lifted in 2016, Copts in Egypt had previously been forbidden by the Church from visiting the Holy Land since the 6 day war in 1967.

I honestly find it funny when people show up today on the internet thinking they are the ones who will bring down the Coptic Orthodox Church and her sisters from the Orthodox Holy Oriental Churches distort its history, or silence the voice of truth. We are talking about the Coptic Orthodox Church , a Church with a great and ancient history, one that endured persecution, attempts to break it, and campaigns of distortion over many centuries, and yet remained. So someone is not going to come today ,a Protestant American, someone who decided to convert to a Byzantine or Greek church and go online attacking the Church through insults, lies, historical distortion, and baseless accusations that have nothing to do with reality, and think that this will somehow silence the voice of truth or damage the image of the Church. As H.H Pope Shenouda III once said: “O people, slowly , turn through the pages of history and understand; say to whoever is called great that the Lord of the Copts is greater.” You need to realize that you do not know whom you are fighting. The Coptic Orthodox Church is not new, and its history will not be changed by a post, a video, or noise on the internet. I hope you gonna find peace and healing away from this lowly approach of spreading lies and rewriting the history . This Conference of African Churches was held in Egypt. Its sessions took place between Cairo and Alexandria under the patronage of Pope Shenouda. The conference issued a statement expressing its aspiration toward the Church of Alexandria as a mother Church and a leading Church for the churches of Africa. This matters. Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox leaders are again speaking seriously about healing a separation that has lasted for more than 1,600 years. For us as Oriental Orthodox Christians, this is not about abandoning our Fathers. It is not about pretending history did not happen. It is not about watering down the faith. As Oriental Orthodox, we confess with Saint Cyril of Alexandria: One incarnate nature of God the Word. One Christ. One Son. One Lord. Fully God. Fully man. Without confusion. Without separation. If both sides can honestly confess the same Christ, then humility demands that we take unity seriously. The Church is not called to eternal suspicion. The Lord Himself prayed: “That they all may be one.” Unity cannot be built on slogans. It cannot be built on politics. It cannot be built on pretending differences do not exist. But it can be built on truth, repentance, patience, and the courage to receive what our theologians have already recognized. If the faith is the same, then continued separation becomes a wound in the Body of Christ. As a Syriac Orthodox Christian, I pray for unity without compromise. Unity in truth. Unity in the apostolic faith. Unity in the same Christ our Fathers defended. May God heal what history wounded.

What's not mentioned is that these people didn't just convert to mainstream Eastern Orthodoxy but Oriental Orthodoxy (those that rejected the two natures of Christ ("true God and true man") as defined by the Council of Chalcedon in the 5th century). They entered through the Syriac Orthodox Church, which, along with the Copts, Ethiopians, and Armenians, makes up this much smaller but vibrant group of churches that are in communion with each other.
