Psychedelics just got one of the most unexpected boosts to their credibility yet. And it came from a paper designed to discredit them. A major JAMA Psychiatry study out this week found that psychedelic therapy is no more effective than antidepressants when you account for trial design bias. The researchers went in expecting psychedelics to win, and they didn't. But the entire study missed a key fact: SSRIs have had four decades of pharmaceutical development and billions in research funding behind them. Psilocybin shows up in the archaeological and ethnographic record on every inhabited continent, used ritually for millennia before anyone thought to run a trial on it. So the Lindy effect applies here. An SSRI is 40 years old. Psilocybin has at least 10,000 years of documented human use behind it, across cultures that had no contact with each other. Given equal trial data, I'm going with the one that's been around longer.
