Writers: try to avoid ANY flashbacks, info-dumps, context-building, or stage setting in at least the first chapter, but preferably the first two or three. There are good reasons for this:

I was talking to my students about this after reading their midterm essays. I could tell that they wanted to show to me that they knew and had all the data and information. So I’m having them read some of the greats to encourage them to be more open and entertaining with style.

What makes personal libraries special, in my opinion, is that every book I own has a story. I either purchased it myself or someone gave it to me, which makes it very meaningful. Book by book, I’ve built my library, and each one represents a choice or a memory.

If you’re a parent, please get books into your child’s bedroom. Lots and lots of books. Just having the option to flip through a book when they’re young will give them such an advantage when they get into the classroom. Sincerely A teacher

if you are bored and need to leave the house, i cannot emphasize enough how you should just go to the library. just take a walk to your local library. have a little browse. truly the community equivalent of retail therapy.
